Paper Jam message on Brother MFC 5840CN

I was having a problem with the printer. It said it could not complete the cleaning cycle. Last week someone from FixYa gave me the code to reset the count cycle which took care of that problem. However, when I now try to print, the paper will only feed up to the area of the printer head and I get a paper jam error message. When I open and close the top the printer will feed the paper right on through but without any printing. Is there some kind of other code I need to reset something. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

Here is what has happened so far. I tried to follow the instructions,

"Go back in to maintenance mode by pressing Menu, *,2,8,6,4 withing two seconds. Once you are in there, you will want to press one of the numbers from 0-9 one at a time to search for the maintenance function that will clear the paper sensor error, which is what you have."

What I get is maintenance 0 or maintenance 1 or whatever number I pushed but no instructions as to what I have. If I were to find something that looked promising what would I push to activate it? Any additional help for a dummy?

I am still getting the "paper jam open top" error. You open and then immediately close and it will shoot the paper right on out with nothing printed. I have gone into the menu, start button, 2864, maintanance mode many times. A single number produces nothing only double numbers, ie. 00, 01, 02 etc. I can find absolutely nothing about paper jams anywhere. Actually I don't find much at all and most of it is criptic and I have no idea what it is. I guess I am not understanding something I need to understand. I will continue to try more helps before using the machine to see what happens when hit by simultanous double barrel shotgun blasts.

I really appreciate you guys trying to help. Please be patient with me. A couple times the comment "reconfigure your printer" has been used. How do you do that?

  • wbrooks212 Dec 16, 2008

I took all the trays out and vacuumed and blew the interior well. Then I turned the machine upside down and tapped all around. No difference. I still get the paper jam message when I try to print.

  • wbrooks212 Dec 16, 2008

I ran the setup program from the CD and as far as I can tell there are no foreign objects. However, I am still getting the paper jam message when I try to print.

  • wbrooks212 Dec 19, 2008

Since I have not heard anything for the past couple days, does that mean that my printer is unable to be helped?

Can you still make a standalone copy on the unit without the error ?

if yes : change usb cable / use another usb port

if no : you already cleaned the whole thing, inspect the paper path (where the jam happens) for any possible obstruction like plastic flaps. something is blocking the paper that's why after opening the top cover, the printer is able to shoot the paper out with or without printing (issue is about the jam).

I just bought the 5860 and have this issue right out of the gates. I discovered that the back lid causes the paper jam when using the bottom tray while examing with a flash light during a print job. I dislodged the back plate/lid (same lid you remove to pull paper jam out) out about 10mm and fastened the lid loosely to the back with a piece of tape on each side. The paper from the bottom tray does not slam against the back of the printer any more, thus more freedom of movement and no jams. Just successfully printed an 80 page document. You shouldn't have to do this with a new printer but I got it so cheap with all the rebates that I'm going to keep it and live with this fix. To sum up, the problem is a design flaw where the removable back plate is snapped in too tightly and contacts the bottom tray paper roller (& paper) during a print cycle. To fix you need to clear the path by pulling the back lid out slightly and taping each side with scotch tape to 'suspend'the back plate out about 10mmPaper Jam message on Brother MFC 5840CN - f9589b1.jpg

If the paper is not pulled uniformedly on both sides, but the printer is pulling more on one side that is a mechanical problem, as one of the traction wheels that load the papre is not doing its job properly, and paper is getting jammed into the printer.

Being this a mechanical problem , you will not be able to fix it just using a service menu reset command.
Moreover, service menu commands can cause damage to the printer if used in the wrong way.

Try loading some thick paper into the machine, if you can reach the paper feeding wheels with your finger (the ones that load paper from tray), try moving them, in case one is stuck up.

If this does not solve the problem , the machine must be taken apart to fix the mechanical problem (this is not a counter rest problem).
In this case I suggest calling a local technician to repair the printer.

HELLO, i suggest you backup your computer system, reformat the system and reinstall the driver for the printer and rerun the printer on the computer again. and first make sure the printer can perform self test. if the printer cant perform self test that means the system is not faulty and the fault is coming from the printer.so you need to reset the printer to the manufacturer settings and that is if you are sure there is no paper jam remaining in the paper roller compartment.

Before you can clear a "PAPER JAM" or "PRINTER JAM" error, you must locate where in the unit the paper is jammed.
First, unplug the machine for safety and disconnect the telephone line. Next, follow these instructions based on where the paper jam is located.

Paper is jammed inside the paper tray:

  1. Pull the paper tray out of the MFC.

To prevent paper jams, do not put multiple kinds of paper in the paper tray at the same time.

In order for you to reconfigure the printer, you just need to ruin the setup cd for it and follow the wizard again to install the printer, and also make sure that there's no foreign object on your printer that is causing the Paper Jam error......

Its the error of the sensor which detects the paper in the tray that sensor is either got moved from its orignal position or broken internally so its showing this paper jam error.and pulls the paper when you open and close the door.it could either be that the sensopr is getting blocked somewhere due to any piece of torn paper in the printer or due to dust particles collected in the sensor area of the printer.this happens many times and its very common.and deep servicing and cleaning solves this problem.till the dust is collected another time in the printer.also some times turning the printer up side down and tapping all the sides of the printer particularly the back side get the sensor adjusted.(but sometimes not every time). thanks

Turn printer Off, take all paper put and put just one papper in and turn the printer back on, reconfigure the printer and try to print something out with that one piece of paper. If it prints fine you can put all paper back no problem..and your good to go!

If there is no paper jam it very well could be a sensor problem...Make sure avery thing is closed and make sure you have paper tray inserted in the right posistion...If all else fails try cleaning inside of unit and reseting!
hope this helps!

Go back in to maintenance mode by pressing Menu, *,2,8,6,4 withing two seconds. Once you are in there, you will want to press one of the numbers from 0-9 one at a time to search for the maintenance function that will clear the paper sensor error, which is what you have.

The only other known method of resetting paper sensors is to push while feeding soem heaving card stock or magazine cover cut to size to push the sensor flag back up fully and then it will drop down into the normal position.

Yes, while in one of the numbered maintenance modes, you also push another number on the keypad. In your case, the best we can hope for is through the hunt and peck method. That is, you go through each first primary number, then press a second number, the secondary number. I could not find any direct number sequence related to your particular problem. Therefore, the hunt and peck method. If I had your printer here, this is what I would do. Since this is remote support, we can only guide you.

To reassure you though, this approach in remote support to finding the Easter Egg that's hiding in the menu system *has* worked before and your results should you have results, I will enter into a database used among we technicians.

As stated, you may also try to contstantly press paper feed, and feed heavy paper stock or a magazine cover cut to size, through the paper path. If you can succeed with this it may very likely reset the paper jam flag sensor. These sensors are located all through the paper path. These can also fail, although its not likely. I'd like to see you get this resolved without having to pay around $100 to have it serviced, where they will enter a keypad code and smile when taking your money.

    Cheers,

Have you tried feeding a very heavy piece of paper through areas of your paper path so you can push the sensor flag back and this will drop it back down. The heavier the paper the further back the sensor flag is pushed. This is the usual quick fix at this point in working your problem.

Still, you may have a damaged, broken or malfunctioning paper present sensor.

I've looked for a Master Reset sequence on your machine and I cannot find one for you, that's what we mean by ReConfigure.

My brother 5840CN. lit says unable to print. the manual says to take the jam out - there was no jam. Turn it off, then on. i did that. It still says unable to print, look at troubleshooting page

errr.....No, no it does not. The Manual says that "unable to clean" means one of two things.....
1. The MFC has a mechanical problem.-OR-2. A foreign obstacle, such as a clip or ripped paper, is in the MFC.
but regardless, I don't believe it *IS* a 'cleaning' problem per se.Try resetting the power purge counter.

Press menu > Mono Start > 4x Arrow up after another. All lights will flash.
1. Power clean - Press 7>6>4 >Mono? Start.
2. Power Purge: 7>6 >3 >Mono Start.
Press 9>9 to exit maintenance mode. Run a print quality test print.

Did you take out the trays to see if paper is stuck/jammed under the print mechanism? Check to see if torn paper is in the rollers?

If you unplug the machine when the printhead is out of the corner, you can shine a light in and see where the crumpled paper is, usually on the right side where the cleaning assembly is.

Error : Unable to clean

Unable to clean means that the waste-ink "sponge" is full. If you've already checked for small paper part (which is very unlikely to cause this error message), the error is mechanical. Unfortunately, that's not something us users can change, but the machine would require to be sent to service. So if your machine is not within warranty, I'd doubt it'll be worth the service cost.
