I haven't used my crock pot in a while and am using it today. The outside of the crock pot is extremely hot (even on low). I don't remember it ever being like this before. I thought it was always warm to the touch. It got this hot right after being plugged in for only minutes. Is this normal? Do I need a new crock pot?
This is not normal. Thermal switch is not functioning correctly. Wiring inside not easy to replace. Crock pots cause a lot of home fires. Cheaper to simply buy a new one.
The Rival Model 3040 manufactured between 1999 and 2004 was included in a safety recall. The official reason was handle breakage. There seem to be a lot of people who think this model runs too hot, though. For more information, go to www.rivalrecall.com.

I have the same thing - brand new crockpot, plugged it in, brushed my hand against it 20 minutes later and just about burned myself. Shouldn't the outside just be warm?!

I've lost the instructions for my crockpot and don't know if it needs to be full to a certain level. At the moment the contents are only about 2 inches deep and the outside/top are extremely hot. Does it need to be full to operate properly?
