I think your DC Power Jack is bad. The DC Power Jack is where the power cord plugs into the laptop. If it is bad, then a good power cord cannot charge the battery, nor can the laptop turn on once the battery is drained.

You say it smelled burnt, that might mean it took a power surge. I always tell people that before your plug the power cord into the electrical outlet on the wall to remove the other end of the cord from the laptop. That way if you get a power surge you will only damage the power cord and not the dc power jack or motherboard.

Anyway, take an ink pen and push it into the dc power jack and see if there is some movement. The little pin or the casing of the jack should not wiggle.

The DC Jack is soldered onto the motherboard. To replace it you will have to take the laptop apart, desolder the old dc jack and solder a new jack onto the board. Sometimes the DC Jack sits in a slot rather than being soldered. The palmrest and bottom case helps to keep it in place. This type of DC Jack usually has a cable harness that plugs into the motherboard.

My sony vaio won't turn on

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.

I'm inclined to think that your power cord is bad and you have drained your battery.

Hi.

Take out the AC power jack and then remove the laptop battery. Plug AC power back in and see if the laptop will turn on. If it turns on let it boot the operating system and then shut down as normal, remove the power cord and reinsert the battery and again see if it will switch on. If it does then there has been a glitch with the battery. If it doesn't then there is a problem with the battery.

If the laptop won't switch on either with or without the battery then there is a possibility that the motherboard has developed a problem.

Good luck.

When you say you "tried turning it on with the battery removed", did you leave it plugged into the wall with the charging adapter at the time? Please clarify that you tried to use it while plugged in without the battery and it would not power up? When you plugged it in without the battery, was the green charging light on? Or did you get no power light at all?

With your battery in, try using a different outlet to plug into. Plug it into another outlet and when the green charging light comes on press and hold your power button on your keyboard and do not release it for 30 to 45 seconds. Tell me if this boots up the pc even if just for a moment?

There are three lights on your keyboard that should come on when the laptop is plugged in and turned on. One is the power light, the other is the battery charging light and the last one is the hard drive indicator that looks like a round cylinder on the picture. Tell me when you plug it into the outlet and the battery charge light is on, does the hard drive light come on and/or flicker when you try to power up the laptop? How many lights come on when you press and hold down the power button with the cord plugged into the wall?

There are a few things left you can try. First take the battery out and make sure the unit is unplugged. Next push the power button a few times to discharge any power inside the unit. Now put the battery back in and while plugging in the unit see if the charge light comes on or flickers at all.

If it flickers and goes out, you have a bad power cord or worse a bad jack on the laptop's main board. If it never comes on, you have a bad power cord or mainboard. The battery is probably dead (doesen't have a charge left in it.)

You said this happens regardless of if the battery is inserted. Have you tried powering up the unit with no battery installed and just the power plug?

I'd see about gettting a replacement cord first. If that doesen't do it you probably have a bad board.

There are a few possible causes.
  • Your computer is coming on, but your screen is out and you just cant tell. You should see light come on and hear a few noises from the cd drive and hard drive.
  • Your power supply is bad (the corded thinggy)
  • Your battery is bad and has damaged the cord too.
  • The plug in the back of the computer is damaged (Possibly from a bad battery melting the connector)
  • You computer has lightning/surge damage and is just broken
  • The motherboard has failed completely
First, test the simple things.
  1. Remove your battery and try to start with only the cord.
  2. Check the plug that the power supply plugs into. Is it loose does it wiggle? It may need replaced/repaired
  3. Plug the power cord back in and wiggle do any of the light flicker? This may confirm step 2.
  4. Take your computer to a simple repair shop and see if they have a power supply you can try. REMOVE your battery first. If it works, great! Get the power supply.
  5. If none of these are the problem, leave the computer at the repair place for them to look at. There are a few other problems, but you probably cant check those yourself.

Inspiron E1505 - ac power not always on when plugged in outlet

I've had both the battery and the cord die in my old Dell laptop. Assuming it's like mine and the light is on while the battery's charging and turns off when the it's full....

Dell batteries don't last more than a year or two, so my first question would be how old is the battery you are currently using? When a battery is dying, it essentially isn't able to use its full capacity. So in addition to lasting less than an hour or so, it will try to charge for 6-12 hours trying to get a full charge even though it can't. So the light will stay on until it gives up. It will start charging again if you unplug it and plug it in again. If this is the case, you can either replace the battery ($100+ bucks) or ignore it and don't use the battery.

If the power cord is going, it will only work at certain angles. Play around with wiggling and bending the cord (not TOO far though!!) to see if you can get the battery light to shut off when you move the cord in a certain direction. A new power cord/adapter will cost you around $50 I think, if that's the problem. Let me know if your problem doesn't seem like either of these.

Hope this helps and best of luck!
