you might need to clean your laser, if they get dirty from playing games they won't read anything. When you put a game in the laser flashes once to read what type of disc is in, if its dirty it wont read anything and thinks there is no disc in it. If cleaning it dosen't help then you might just have to replace the laser. They aren't overly expensive and they are pretty easy to install as well.
Listen to the drive if it spins and sounds normal then you will have to replace the laser inside the drive. If it's now spinning up then there's a problem with the motor and most likely will have to replace the motor or the drive.
The disk not spinning can be one of many things. first and foremost, did you have green lights on the ring or were there 3 red lights. If there were 3 red lights then you have hardware problems and we will need to get you the code of the problem. Now, if you have a green light then the problem most likely is that the laser has either gone bad or is out of adjustment. The voltage adjustment is not a hard thing if you have experience with a meter. HOWEVER YOU MUST BE VERY AND I MEAN VERY CAREFULL WHEN YOU HAVE THE COVER OFF OF A 360. It will take less than 5 minutes of run time to smoke the processor if you do not have all the airflow ducts and cover in place. TRUST ME ON THIS I repair game machines as part of my professional living. You can take a look at the laser and see if you get a red flashing of light when trying to read the disk. if you do not the laser is bad. If you do then it still may be out of adjustment. JUST BE CAREFUL TO NOT LOOK STRAIGHT INTO THE LASER YOU COULD DAMAGE YOUR EYES keep your eyesite off of a direct view. You will still be able to see if it lights up.
Another option is that the motor is bad. to know this you will have to wire the motor to a power supply and test it out. if it spins when hooked to an extenal supply then it is good.
It could also be that the circuitry on the motherboard that tells the motor when to spin is no longer working right. You should get some type of error on the screen or red lights if this is the case. but not always I have had 2 machines that said all was well when the motherboard was the issue. So, you have a little research work to do first. let me know about the lights!!
Hi i had the same problem on my 360,
so i got a new laser off of ebay,
and that didn't fix it so then i read some fourms,
and found that my drive motor that spins the disc was broken,
so i replaced that and now the xbox is working like new again :)
