HELP... my Axim just started locking up, when it is powered on the "progress bar" along the bottom of the screen goes about 99% of the way across & stops..
I have tried Soft Reset, Hard Reset, taking the battery out for weeks, letting the battery run totally down, etc then charging it in the cradle by itself.. NOTHING WORKS... HELP

Re: Axim locked up
My first opinion would refer to the operating system stored in ROM. Maybe you have a ROM data corruption and you may need to upgrade/reinstall the OS and other files in ROM.
As you can't make a connection with active sync (try it however) you will need to have the ROM updated via a specially formated SD card. This is risky to do it yourself as it involves hex editing and raw formating a SD card. If something is done wrong the process fails and the PDA could get damaged. Please go to a service center to have it fixed by them. It is the most safest way.
If you however manage in some way to make an active sync connection with you pda (either a partnership or guest connection) you can try to upgrade the ROM yourself using the patch provided by Dell (this is a safe way).
Here is a link to download a ROM installation file (english version, also it is Windows Mobile 5, it will also upgrade your operating system)
(this is an official upgrade from Dell, please follow the instruction in the program).

The Axim touch screen is extremely sensitive to the placement of the protecting plastic sheet. Check that the the plastic sheet is oriented correctly - the small bended corners must bend downwards. If that wasn't the problem then remove the protection sheet and pick gently directly on the screen with the stylus to see if you get a response. Most often this is due to a problem with the screen protecting plastic sheet.
With much regret I did a hard reset. It appeared that some how in my carrying case that hard reset got started and I could not get it out of the lock up with out taking it clear through. I hadn't backed up for a couple of month but didn't loose much data. Thanks for the follow up.
I got the same problem. I even tried to plug the battery to the second battery charging slot, still couldn't get it back to life. But the Ipaq screen lights on with progress bar progress for about 5 seconds, then dead again. I even doubted the battery was toasted. I gave it a final shot: 1. Remove the battery, and then put it back. 2. While the screen lights on, within 2 seconds, cold reset the unit by press the hole with stylus and push the power button at top in the same time. In my case, the progress bar will keep going until I see the tap screen instruction and everything back to normal. But it reminds me that the removable battery is totally discharged. So I put it in cradle and I am able to synch it with my PC. Everything seems o.k. while it sits in the cradle, except the charging light won't turn red. When I remove it from the cradle, it still lights on, battery shows 99% which is healthy. but when I turned it off, it won't start anymore. I have to repeat the above steps to revive it. Sometimes I have to remove the battery and wait for a while and then put it back, so that the screen can light on to give me chance to cold reset. Conclusion: Maybe need a new battery. I will check Ebay to get one. Please post if you have other solutions.
I suggest making sure the lock switch on the upper left side of the PDA is not in the lock position. I had this problem and I think that I just bumped it into the lock position. This lock switch prevents any buttons from being a input to the PDA. Hope this helps, Duane.
One other issue I always encounter is that I have to disable both of the "power conservation" settings that would allow the Axim to shut off the WLAN radio when the battery goes low. Having them enabled (which happens by default) seems to keep my Axim from locking onto our WiFi. When I disable them, I get an immediate strong connection.
You can find these settings under the Dell WLAN ultility.
you basically need to get the wire to stop touching the home key, which can be accomplished (as described in the link) with either the quick fix method, wedging something in the bottom screen, or the better-long term method of opening the axim up and taping the part that has shorted.
