You need to put the card reader back into the camera before starting it up again.

Try putting new batteries, if camera does not start at all, there is an internal fault.

If camera starts and take pictures but you have black screen, then it is a faulty lcd.

Get new batteries, Test the camera with new batteries, with USB not connected.

If camera does not start at all, as I understood, that means that it has been damaged doing the USB connection.

There are 5V on your USB cable, if misfortunately the connector shorts out when you pull out the camera, you can fry somenthing on the board inside.

That is the reason why they suggest to power down from Windows (or other OS) the USB devices before unplugging. I

Reset is done automatically when you remove the battery.

If the camera does not start at all, check your warranty status, and call Nikon to find out eventual cost of repair, or availability of eventual warranty extension.

Try also this one, and ask them well how it works, this is a private reseller, ask well the terms of the extension, it should cover the repair if you did not caused the damage by yourself.
The camera board may fail by itself at any time.
    Here is the link :

Turn it on without the card inside, check the battery contacts are not dirty, have no oxide, and there is no foreign object.

if you are 100 percent sure that batteries are OK, and no card is inside, then the camera is faulty.

There are many faults that can cause the camera having no power. A short on USB was just a possibility.
If the camera has received a shock, something may have broken, or the ribbon cable that hooks up to the board may have slipped out. If nothing happened a component may simply have blown.

Test carefully the battery , test camera with no card, if it does not restart is faulty, in that case follow instructions on my previous message.

I have a Nikon coolpix l5 that won't zoom in or out all the way got any ideas on how to fix this?

Your camera is an older 7.2 Mega-pixel low resolution camera and the cost of repair would be far more then the $17 to $23 value I see on E-bay. I would recommend that you upgrade to one of the newer low cost (under $100) cameras that all have at least 12 Mega-pixel resolution.

Nikon Coolpix 8800 and VISTA Ultimate 64

in Vista Nikon Picture Perfect is not a requirement   Any photo software will do.   I remove my chip and insert it into my printer to upload photos manually as though it were a hard-drive   i used to use the firewire and leave the chip in my Nikon d70s and let windows or the photo software of your choice offer to upload the photos for me.  Try Picasa or ACDSee Photo Manager and ACDSee Pro    peer to peer sites or torrents share these with cracks/serials for you to explore Picasa is free online

You can download PictureProject software from this address: http://chsv-soft.nikon-image.com/jpn/software/win/S-P2____-175WU-JPNJP.exe

That is the only Nikon software that supports Vista since your camera is "outdated".

Here is a quote from Nikon site:

  • We had released a Windows Vista-compatible version of PictureProject, v1.7.5, for use with the models listed below, and all models that followed. PTP (models supporting the PTP protocol) and Mass storage USB transfer options can be used for camera connection. However, the camera's transfer button can not be used to transfer pictures over a PTP connection. Set the USB transfer option to Mass storage to enable the camera's transfer button.
Currently, the new Nikon Transfer and View NX will replace Picture Project as our new Image Transfer and Browser applications. These applications support the same Nikon products as Picture Project.

Use a card reader or card slot to transfer images.
