Only takes pictures when it wants to

I dropped my camera on the garage floor the other day, ( I know how awful) It landed with the lens up but now it is only taking pics when it feels like it.

It sounds to me as if this camera needs an urgent service. Most likely a connection inside has become intermittent. Unfortunately dropping a camera is one of the worst fates I could ever wish upon someone. We all know to use the strap, but we only drop them the instant we let go of the strap.  You were very lucky it did not land lens down. I have seen lens mounts ripped from their anchoring with the remainder of the lens smashing the mirror and sensor. At least it works temperamentally. Good luck with the service!

I own a casio exilim ex-z850. it has been showing a lens error, every time i try to take switch it on. the memory card is fine, i view the pictures. but the lens wont open up or anything. please reply...

Hi,
This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed due sand, dust, may be due to external shock caused by dropping the device.
  • You can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
  • You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
  • If motor is running but lens won't retract sometimes lens would slip off with the gear or break off a tooth in the gear when it gets dropped. Try to gently move the lens barrel around with the finger and see if it is moving, but if tooth or gear is broken lens will move onces or twice then it will stuck again.
Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.

Good luck and have a nice day.
Rating the solution is highly appreciated.

I dropped it while taking a picture onto concrete floor, and now the lens are out but it's turned off and when i try to turn it back on it beeps 3 times and turns itself off, and the batteries are fine.

The lens mechanism is jammed, and any any DIY repair attempts will probably make it worse. The camera needs professional help, so I suggest that you take it to a local camera shop (NOT the camera department in a chain store) or contact Samsung via their web site to arrange repair. Be sure to get a firm price, not just an estimate, before you commit to anything. The price of the fix can approach the cost of a new camera, and repairs typically only carry a 30-day warranty.

You need to take your camera to the nearest service centre. Lens might have got damaged accidently.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Retry power on and lens error message

From the sounds of it, your lens is faulty and would require replacing.

You may need to call some of the camera repair centres in your area (State), they may have a 2nd hand lens that requires a clean up and they might be able to use that to repair your camera at a lower cost.
