If you are running PC, go to Start -> Run -> type 'Services' (or go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> then Services).

Finally scroll down to where it says Universal Plug and Play Device Host, and double click it. At the bottom, you'll see either an option to start or stop the device. If stopped, start it, and change it to automatic.

If that doesn't work, try using it with another comp. Does it open then? IF so, its your computer that is the problem here. If not, you have hardware failure.

Was there a reason why you got new anti-virus software. Did you have a virus before. If so, there might have been something that happened to it via a virus.

If this is the case, if you at least get it running some how, run a virus scan on the drive.

Do you have a warranty on the drive? Cause if worse comes to worse, you can just replace it.

Don't know how to upload data to new computer

Browse to the location on the new computer where you want to save the old data.
Right click and choose New Folder.
Name the folder Files from Old PC
Press enter twice and the new folder will open.
Plug the Maxtor USB into the new computer and turn on the power.
The drive will install and be given a drive letter in my computer.
Browse to the drive in My Computer and double click the Maxtor drive.
Browse to the folder where you saved the old data and open it.
Now do the keyboard command CTRL + A (select all) this will select all the files.
Click one of the selected files & drag them all to the new folder you have open and let go.
All of the files from the Maxtor will copy to your new computer.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

My maxtor wont work at all

It could be a couple things - do you still have the Maxtor software installed on the PC? If not you may need to reinstall the software because it may be a password protection issue.

If that is not the case the drive could be damaged. If damaged you may or may not be able to recover the data. Try downloading a product I have used before from Easeus (http://www.easeus.com/). Its drive recovery software and may locate the drive when Windows cannot.

If that does not work you may need a professional to repair the drive or recover the data.

Transfering data from Maxtor to a new computer

It's a USB Hard drive, so you should plug the USB port into one computer, put your information on it, then plug the USB port into the other computer. Browse the Hard Drive for your data. It's like a larger flash drive.
