There are many DVD players that will not play recordable CDs.
It all has to do with the dye-polymer used in the construction of CD-Rs as well as the wavelength of the laser used to read the disc. CD-Rs need to be read by an infrared 780nm (nanometer) laser, whereas DVDs are read by a visible light 635 or 650nm laser.
This is the reason why your DVD player will not read CD-Rs and why it will never do so! DVD players that support CD-R playback tend to have two lasers working on different wavelengths.
