Question about Ruud Handler Air Conditioner

Fan blower overheating

I have had a RUUD UBHC-21J18SFA air handler for 4 years. The fan runs for a while and then stops and there is a burnt smell. If I let it cool down for a while, it will start again and do the same thing about 30 minutes later. I checked the filters, they are O.K. No major dust accumulation in the unit. I noticed the blower wheel (squirrel cage) has a slight vibration laterally when it spins, sort of off balance, but nothing major, it doesn't rub on either side. The motor becomes very hot to touch while running. I can turn the fan with my fingers when the power is off, and with a slight swing, it will spin for approximately 3/4 of a turn. Somebody told me it should turn 4-5 times around with a manual spin before stopping... I took out the cage and the motor and can turn the motor shaft manually but it seems a little sticky.
Is the problem the motor? or the capacitor? Or is the slightly off balance cage causing the motor to overheat?
Any diagnostic tests I can do myself to find the SOURCE of the problem?
Thanks!

The motor is bad. The shaft was a little loose and the "bushings" (bearings?) were damaged. I called the dealer and there is no more garantee on the motor because it was installed 5 1/2 years ago though I have owned the house (and the air handler for only 4 years). He is asking over 500$ to order the original GE 1/3 hp 900 rpm 3.2 amps motor. The motor is supposed to be a sealed "no maintenance" model but I was told I could lubricate the "bushings" with a little mechanical oil once in a while as preventive maintenance so this doesn't happen again..

Question 1: Can I save this motor if I open it? Any parts I can change or lubricate inside to make it turn smooth again like tuning up a bicycle wheel?

Question 2: If have called everywhere and I don't seem to find a replacement model (besides ordering the 500$ original from the dealer!!!) for the original motor. Either the specifications don't match or they don't have the 8 screw holes for mounting. I found a 1/3 hp with only 825 rpm max or a 1/2 hp with 1075 rpm max. Can I take a chance with either one or am I "doomed" to pay big bucks and order from the manufacturer.

    Thanks for your time.

I'm in Montreal, Canada. Internet companies in the USA don't seem to ship to Canada. I got the bushings changed on the original motor as an emergency solution. It's been running for the last 12 hours . Hope it will last a while. I also purchased the stronger 1/2 HP 1075 max rpm motor at a more reasonable price. The guy told me if it turned too fast, I could «gear down» by choosing t0o connect a different wire (high or medium or low). With a little fitting I hope it will work when the other motor goes down for good.

    Thanks again for your time.

Sounds like your motor is bad check when it was installed all the units have a 5 yr warranty on parts but a HVAC contractor has to change it for the warranty

I have a Ruud heat pump/air conditioner. The out side fan and unit works fine and cools fine but now the inside fan that blows the cool air in will not turn on. We can turn the fan with our hand so I don't...

You didn't mention if you checked for 115 volts at the power supply to the air handler. The unit outside has its own power supply. A lot of times the switch that is on the wall doesn't like to work after its been turned off and back on for service, also check the blower door safety switch. If the blower door hasn't been put back in place properly and snugly it will kill power to the whole air handler. Hope this helps. Good luck

sounds like the compressor is or a electrical component directly linked with the cooling operation/ outdoor unit running.
Possible short to earth....

Air handler motor stopped working

Check the capacitor before you replace the motor. It's a common problem that's easily fixed. Make sure the fan rotates freely.

Hi - I have a RUUD system, the heat won't come on

sounds like the "Fan/Limit" switch. It is to turn on the fan as the heat exchanger warms up. I believe it has failed. Check it out.

Hope this helps.

Ruud UBHC-21J18SFA blowing only "luke warm" air at best

That's crazy, we're having the same problem.  Turns out there was a wattage restrictor in the furnace that was switching off 3 of the 5 heating elements in an attempt to save energy.  Basically, the restrictor was sensing that the incoming air was warm, so only 2 of the 5 coils should be needed to heat the air.  Well that wasn't enough and we just sat with the furnace running all day long struggling to reach the 70 degree setpoint.
This is something a technician can diagnose in a few minutes, but not the sort of thing a DIY'er should really handle.

Ruud air handlers

Check the name plate amperage on the air handler. The air handler only has the blower motor as its main current draw. #12 wire is rated for 20 Amp service. If the amp draw by the unit supplied by the disconnect is under 15 amps it should be fine (but) once again check the name plate for ampacity rating.
