Canon camcorder HV20 is not recognized by computer

Windows. XP is the os. When I first connected camcorder my 2pc,s didn,t see it. Then through hook or crook they both started seeing the camcorder by way of HD split then also by Roxio easy media 9 and 10. Everything was fine . I went out of town so I cut the computers off and upon my return neither computer sees the camcorder in any software.I can write a dvd with a seperate dvd writer and then capture from this disc but very troublesome. My computers have 2g of ram and plenty of storage. thanks aceshags

Hi, did you try using firewire cable to connect to PC ?
Try doing it and open Windows Movie Maker and try to capture video from device.
If doesnt work, try reinstalling the firewire port driver. Also restart the PC before trying the camera.

I have seen someone having similar problem and he/she solved by using HDVSplit software which you can download here.

It works with HV 20 even if it is not listed in the supported list.

This is usually caused by a defective component in the tape detection circuitry and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

I'm trying to connect my canon hv 20 to my macbook pro, and the computer won't detect the camera.

Connect via USB to see contents of the miniSD card. Connect via Firewire to do anything with recorded video/audio. USB setting may require further fooling around with camera settings to be visible on some computers, since the miniSD card should mount, just like a flash drive. I have one of these camcorders and this all works just fine.

TRANSFER TO PC

Hook up camera let windows say find new hardware. FOllow the prompts. Acording to Sony Xp has the driver already unless it is a 64 bit. See Below:
  • The drivers needed to connect most Sony® cameras and camcorders to a computer are already included in the Windows Vista and Windows XP operating systems. With these drivers, you should be able to connect and transfer files to a computer.
Note: If the your camera or camcorder is not recognized by the computer when connected, you may need an updated driver.
  • Detailed Windows Vista compatibility information is available for Sony Cameras and Camcorders.
  • The Windows Vista Starter edition and Windows XP 64-bit operating systems are not supported.

Regarding the canon hv20 camcorder. When using an external canon MIC a) How do you know the mic is working and you are not picking up sound on the internal MIC b)On connecting the external MIC an icon...

If you put the camcorder in manual mode, there is a microphone sensor that will move when sound is picked up by the external microphone. In manual you can keep everything else automatic. The off for the mic means that the built in mic is turned off when an external mic is attached.
