Canon MP730 Printhead Problems

POSTED BY margaret123 on Dec 26, 2007…. Pictures are not coming out good. When I do printer heads alignment , in column D and E there is nothing there.... YOUR ANSWER posted on Dec 29, 2007: Warning: This can be messy. Covering your counter or table and wearing throw away plastic gloves is strongly recommended. Take all the ink cartridges out. Wipe the rims of the ink ports and seal with tape or peel & stick label, to stop them from drying out and set aside. Flip up the plastic lever on the right side of the ink cartridge holder box. This will release the hold down mechanism that keeps the print head in solid contact with the electrical contacts at the back of the ink cartridge holder. Gently lift out the actual print head. You may have to gently use a straightened out paper clip to rock it out so you can get it with your fingers. Get a small plastic tub (cottage cheese or yogurt container) etc., and soak it in rubbing alcohol for an hour or two. Put enough over it to also soak the ink screens on the other side from the printing part of the head. Clean gently with a Q-tip and alcohol. Inspect the bottom side with a magnifying glass if available, and get any dried ink off. Change the alcohol and do this again until all ink is gone. Finally, shake the alcohol out over a newspaper (watch, it’s messy) and leave overnight to dry. Clean the gold dots with alcohol just before you put it back in. It is important not to touch the gold or the actual printing part of the print head. Put it all back together and run a few head cleanings thin a nozzle check. If the problem persists, call Canon and order a new print head. Approx. $60-70. Good luck.

MY PROBLEM IS: Columns B and J (in blue print) have definite vertical lines/vertical stripes; Column G does not show any print at all. I purchased and installed a new printhead and still have the same problem. Where do I go from here?

The problem is most likely your ink catcher, it is a sponge that catches any ink when it is being cleaned. you need to remove it and clean it then put it back in. there will be instructions in your manual.

You probably need a new purge assembly, it draws some ink to both clean and prime the printhead. When it stops working you won't get any ink to the paper.

SOURCE: Most of Group 1inks,(except red) won't print

Over on the right is not waste ink pads, waste ink is under the print engine covering the whole bottom of the printer. On the right is the purge assembly and there is ink on the filters on top and on the squeegee that wipes the printhead. You may need a new purge assembly, or just re attach a hose in the purge unit that may have come off. That printer is well worth the repair...

You could clean the black ink cartridge. For this you need to remove the black ink cartridge which is present in the printer. In order to clean the laser or scanner block you could use a cotton swab as it would fully clean the dirt. You need to clean the grime and the dried ink present in the printer. This would remove all the hindrances which prevent the ink from flowing. Cleaning the printer heads would also help to solve the problem.

Try reseating the printhead. Remove the ink cartridges, lift up the lock lever and then pull the printhead out at an angle (IIRC). Then reinsert the printhead and lower the lever. Then reinsert the ink tanks one by one; Press down until you hear the click. Close the scanning unit and hit Set to print the alignment page. Tell the printer which line in each column has the best print quality (most solid); this is the horizontal alignment. Then repeat for the vertical alignment.

Try resetting the printer (on/off cycling). If this doesn't work, you may need a new printhead. Unfortunately, this may not solve the problem and you may need to have the unit serviced. Printheads are not returnable once you install them (so if replacing it doesn't help, you are stuck with the spare.)

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Canon Multipass MP730...placed new ink cartridge in twice now...nothing be printed...what could the problem be?

For me, there can be 3 problems, and I will do what I do in order.

1. The print head may be clogged. To unclog it, you have to remove the 4 cartridges, remove the print head (lever up, and remove the printhead), run those silvery things under a luke warm tap and low flow and pressure for about 5 minutes or until no ink drips out, and dont aim for those silvery things, do not touch the contacts on the back. Install the printhead, cartidges, lever down and go for it.

2. Well still no results... Get the printhead out of there again as your machine is getting old and tarnished. Get a sharp knife. Stroke down on those contact things downward only with your knife, a couple of columns at a time, couple of strokes per column. Put everything back, lever down, and go for it.

3. A new print head $50. Sounds a lot, but the last cartridges were $1.69 a pop. These cartidges last quite some time, as long as you fire something through the printer each week. This has to be the most economical bubble jet printer in the world. I have 3 of them.

My MP730 will not print from the computer. It

The print head is clogged.Try unclogging manually.Open the cover and first remove the ink cartridges. Then open the holder and remove the print head.Run hot tap water and put the print head with the nozzles up to stream water.Hold that 5 min then turn the print head around with the nozzles down.Hold that for every color of 5 min. Then put the print head in hot water with the nozzles down.Left it water about 15 min and then you must very nice to dry. When the print head dry put it in printer and start cleaning. If this not help you need to replace the print head. It's part number now is QY6-0064, because the old QY6-0042 is discontinued.

Wrong cartridge message

It appears that the problem is not in the ink cartridges at all but rather the print head assembly. Upon disassembly of the print head it can be discovered that the thing appearing to be a logic chip, is probably responsible for several standard commands including cartridge status. One should replace the printhead and then followed the instructions on aligning the printhead. This solves the problem. It can be  bought from Canon for about $45.00 including shipping. Hopes this helps. Thank you, Have a nice day...!

Canon MP730 not printing. Printhead cleaning doesn't help.

You may need new print heads. They are around $50. Or, you could do this: Take the print head out of the printer, and run warm water from the tap (not high pressure), over the ports for about 5 minutes. Ink will drop out of the jets. Dont touch the electrical contact end of this head. This may clean the head enough so it works again. If not you need a new print head.

just start the printer by making it ON by pressing power button.as the printer moves slightly from its orignal set position remove the power cord as quickly as you can .so the head will be moved from its orignal position and after that there is a rubber belt in the printer which is black in colour just pull it slowly so the head will come nearer and nearer to you remove the cartridges as it comes in the exact position.

Canon MultiPASS MP700

I had the same problem. My 4 year old MultiPASS MP700 started banding magenta stripes across everything I printed.
I suspected the cyan printhead was clogged because the printhead tests showed two of the cyan columns as half missing.
Canon was less than helpful. I went off of my suspicion that I needed a new printhead. I found one from an online supplier for 50 bucks...better price than a new printer! I put the new print head in and it works like new.
