Question about Gateway MT3705 Notebook

1 Answer

Laptop touchpad is left-clicking when it is touched.

I was using my wireless mouse this morning, and it stopped working. I unplugged the USB plug and put it back in and the mouse still didn't work. So, I tried using the touchpad, and anytime I put a finger on it, it's as if I was left clicking. So as I move the arrow, wherever the pointer stops, it selects whatever it's on. I was trying to close a webpage, and as I moved the pointer across the page, if the pointer stopped on a link, it would open that page as well. When I tried to restart the computer, I couldn't get to the restart, because again the pointer stopped on other things and kept opening those other programs.

I had to leave for work, so I wasn't able to try a corded mouse. Just can't figure out why it's doing this. I didn't change any settings, it just started in the middle of my web browsing.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
Brian

After spending some time with this on my own, I found that this problem was related to my battery dying in the wireless mouse. I changed the battery, and the problem is now resolved. Thanks for the sensitivity suggestion.

1 Answer

Touchpad doesn't work

Step 1:
The touchpad of any laptop is always subject to heavy use.
Most touchpads are designed for their durability to sustain the daily wear and tear for the lifespan of the laptop.
However, there may be instances or accidents that cause the touchpads to malfunction or stop working entirely.
There are ways to troubleshoot such problems and there are also remedies to salvage the touchpad's functionality without heavy repair or replacement cost.

Determine What's Wrong
A laptop's touchpad basically provides the functionality of a mouse for a desktop PC, typically with two buttons located just below it acting as the left and right click buttons on a desktop computer. A touchpad may be damaged by excessive use or foreign substances such as water, dirt or food items. Hit the "Windows" button on the keyboard and then use the right-left keys (or hit 'C') to open "Control Panel." From there, again use the right-left keys to get to "Mouse" and then hit "Return." Use the right-left keys to toggle between the tabs and open each to investigate whether any boxes had been improperly clicked by accident that cause the touchpad to become unresponsive. But if any of these steps fail to remedy the problem, then the touchpad may need to be repaired or replaced. b> Repairing/Replacing Touchpad b> A touchpad assembly cost $100 or more and that's not including replacement installation. Hiring a specialist to replace a damaged touchpad, including parts and labor, may easily cost $200. Unless the laptop in question is worth well over $1,000 and the touchpad is deemed a necessity, such repairs are rarely worth the cost. Attempting to replace the touchpad without certain expertise in laptop assembly may be dangerous and/or destructive. Also, getting a replacement part that's not compatible with the laptop may have catastrophic results, including irreversible damage to the laptop. Long-Term and Better Solution b> The simplest, and best, solution to a malfunctioning touchpad is to replace its functionalities with an external mouse. Most PCs sold after 2000 come with USB ports and getting a USB mouse either a corded or a cordless one--will remedy the problem. A cordless USB mouse may be bought for as little as $10 and some of the better-designed ones allow the user to tuck the USB stick inside the mouse's belly when not in use. Even when a touchpad is working properly, a laptop user should be advised to plug in a mouse anyway whenever possible as touchpads are notoriously difficult to use and also leaves the user in an ergonomically incorrect position.

I can use my left and right buttons and the curser is not moving

There may be a "touchpad lock" button on your laptop. Check to make sure that it is not enabled as this would cause the touchpad to not work.

If you still cannot get it to work, try plugging in a USB mouse and restart your computer, which should re-enable it or just power cycle the laptop.

If it still does not return to normal, your laptop's touch panel may be broken. An easy fix is to get a wireless mouse.

My touchpad is not working for click(touch) operation. I feel that this started happening after plug in a USB mouse

When you plug in a USB mouse, the touchpad is usually automatically disabled. Look in your control panel under Mouse or Pointing devices. You will want to look at the settings to ensure that your touchpad turns back on after you unplug the mouse. If your touchpad is NOT returning to normal functionality after you unplug the mouse, try the "safely remove hardware" option (If you have windows). Look in the lower right corner of your screen. If you have a small green arrow icon that safes "safely remove hardware" when you put the mouse pointer over it, click on it. If the mouse shows up in the list, highlight it, and click Stop. You can then remove the mouse when Windows tells you it's safe to do so. This may then return full functionality of the touchpad. In some cases, the mousepad click functionality will be disabled if a USB mouse is plugged in. It can remain so if the system doesn't fully acknowledge that the mouse has been removed. That's why I'm suggesting to try the "Safely Remove Hardware" option first. If that doesn't work, there may be a physical problem with your touchpad and it will need to be serviced.

Open the Touchpad properties fron the control panel and you will find an option called disable touch pad when external mouse is attached. You need to check that box and apply the setting.

*Touchpad properties will be located inside the mouse properties.

Touch pad possessed.

To turn off the touchpad when an external mouse or other pointing device is present, you can goto the Control Panel and double click the Mouse properties icon.

Click the Device Select tab and check "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing Device is present." The cursor will no longer move via the touchpad.

Alternatively, you can permanently disable the touchpad of your laptop by clicking the "Disable Device" in the Touch Pad setting. Advanced users can disable the touchpad from the BIOS setup [press F2 when the computer is booting to enter BIOS settings]

For extra USB ports, purchase a USB hub($15 -$20). That way you can add at least 4 USB ports to your laptop.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
