Question about Gateway 3018GZ Notebook

1 Answer

3520 Laptop stops 5 secs after starting.

Yesterday eveything appeared normal. I walked away from the laptop and when I came back the screen was black. I used the power button to turn off, then restarted. Restart appeared normal but after a few minutes (I was back into a microsoft word document) it went black again. Each time I have tried to restart the time from the begin to the black screen has reduced. I am now at about 5 secs and seems to be steady at that. I have just enough time to see the menu for safe mode but not enough to make a selection before blackness. When blackness comes the small indicator for the hard drive is no longer flickering but out. This email is from my desk at work but I have my laptop with me.

How can I access and check the cooling fan?

  • tony308 Dec 09, 2008

I braved the dangers of taking of a cover and lo and behold the fan is only kind of shuddering and not running. I will replace and get back with you.

the problem can be overheating becauise of a defective cooling fan, or a system fault with system noit starting and computer shutting down after few seconds.

The fact that time is reducing, may let think that this is overheating.

To find out if it is overheating , enter in BIOS menu, by clicking the bios button at startup (usually you hit one of the function keys on startup. must be written on the screen at startup)

If the Bios screen stays on for over 30 minutes (in bios setting mode the CPU overheats much slower), then it is not overheating.

If the computer shuts down in BIOS screen , then there must be something wrong on the cooling system, probably one of the internal fans must be replaced.

To access the fan you need to take apart the computer.

If the system starts you can use a software to control the fan

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
The problem is that your computer is not even starting.

Check if the computer stays on when you do not start the system, entering in bios mode, or using a bootable install disk.

If computer stays on, reinstall the system, if it doesn't, have the fan checked.

Start the laptop in safe mode and run System Restore
After that I will suggest you to update your drivers just go the site of your Laptop manufacture. Once there enter the model number OR service tag of the laptop then request driver (usually found in the web site's "Support Section"). There you should be able to find all the drivers for your model laptop
If this didn't help you then it seems that there is registry problem with your OS. so simply get the Intel software partner Reginout to fix all the registry issues which are causing black screen.
