This is actually a faulty port problem. Both ports have been damaged.

Will I have to replace the motherboard?

You cannot easily replace the usb ports as they are soldered as part of the motherboard. If the ports are not working then go as follows and attempt to reset them

I'm going to assume that you're running XP (home or pro). . This is the sequence to use
1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties
2. Click Hardware
3. Click Device Manager
4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controller
5. Right-click each USB device listed and select Uninstall
6. Click OK to confirm removal of each device

Note: Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all devices under UBS Controller are removed

7. Shut down computer.
CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected instead of Restart.
8. Wait a few seconds and turn computer on. When it reboots you will see "Windows has detected new or added hardware"

Note: You will have to insert your Windows CD, if prompted.

These steps will refresh the USB ports.

Added Notes: 1) If your mouse is a USB you will have to use the keyboard to shut down your computer. 2) It would be wise to unplug everything from your USB ports EXCEPT your mouse and/or keyboard before you restart the computer to avoid Windows replicating any printers, scanners, digi-cams, etc. Once Windows has refreshed your USB controllers and ports, shut down again. reconnect, and restart.

Good Luck

As I said, it is not really practical to physically replace the usb ports. if you have a serial port on the laptop then you could usean adaptor such as those on the Ebay link below

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/_W0QQ_nkwZs... If no serial port then the only other way is to replace the motherboard.

But really, it's not worth the effort Don't bother - just buy another and get your data transferred. Go for a used Dell D610. Excellent machines, about 4 years old now but I sell loads and NEVER had a problem. Good build quality, unlike most of todays laptops

CMOS battery Sony Vaio PCG-4G1L

Instructions
    • 1 Open the Vaio screen until you can easily access the keyboard.
    • 2 Locate the plastic bar that borders the top of the keyboard. Insert the flat head screwdriver at one end of the bar and gently pry it up until you can grip the edge with your fingers.
    • 3 Pry the other side of the bar up with the screwdriver and pull out the entire bar, being careful to mind the ribbon cord that connects the keyboard to the computer.
    • 4 Remove the two screws on either side of the keyboard that secure it to the computer. Slide the keyboard up and place it to the side.
    • 5 Remove the four screws on the exposed metal plate that covers the motherboard and remove it. You should now see the CMOS battery in the bottom-right-hand corner of the motherboard.
    • 6 Remove the battery by gently pulling it up and off the motherboard. Replace it with the same model battery (available at any computer store or online). Reassemble the computer the same way you took it apart.

How to remove hard drive from sony vaio pcg-2c1l

As you install new programs, rip music files from CDs or download data from the Internet, the hard drive on your Sony Vaio PCG laptop will eventually fill up and run out of room. You can replace the hard drive with a new one that has a larger capacity.

Power off the Sony Vaio PCG laptop, disconnect the power cord and then close the lid. Flip the computer over so that the bottom is facing up toward you. Press down on the raised latch that holds the battery into place and then pull the battery out of the laptop. Locate the five screws arranged in a square pattern on the right side of the laptop case. Take a screwdriver and remove all of the screws. Slide your fingernail or the tip of the screwdriver underneath the seam of the square plastic cover and lift it up. Grab the cover and remove it. Pull out the two screws that hold the hard drive onto the motherboard. Grab both ends of the hard drive and carefully pull it directly upward for about an inch so that you can see the cable connected to the motherboard. Disconnect the cable and then pull the hard drive the rest of the way out. Take out the four mounting screws that are located on both side edges of the hard drive. Take the replacement hard drive and install the mounting screws into its left and right sides. Plug the cable that runs from the motherboard into the corresponding port on the replacement hard drive. Check the direction of the new hard drive and lay it into the open slot in the same direction as the old hard drive. Use the two screws you pulled out earlier to hold it in place. Slide the cover piece back on and replace the five screws. Push the battery back into the laptop until the latch snaps into place. Hope this helps.

My USB Ports of Sony Vaio VGN FW235 stopped working

first remove all the USB Devices connected to the Computer, go to Device Manager, uninstall all the USB Drivers and restart the Computer. after the restart, the Operating System should reinstall the USB Drivers automatically as the USB Drivers are Operating System generic.
If this does not work, go to Device Manager, right click on the USB Device having Yellow Exclamatory mark and click on Update Device/Driver and select search for the best driver in these location and in the location type C:\Windows\inf and click next.
This should resolve the issue.
If this does not work, you can try performing the System restore where the USB ports are working normally.

Screen Opening

There are clips that are holding it into place. Take a flathead screwdriver and put it in an area where the front bezel meets the back bezel. Twist the screwdriver around and it should loosen some of the clips, do this in a few places and then enough of the front bezel will be loose to where you can remove the front bezel to the screen.

Once you do that you can remove the screws from the left hand side and the right hand side. Then remove the cable from the back of the LCD and remove the plug from the inverter on the bottom of the screen.

You can now put the new screen in.

Sony vaio vgn-fs630/w. the ethernet port and usb ports not workin

Hi,
The best thing you can try is a Static discharge.
Please remove all the external devices. Unplug the power adaptor.Remove the battery. There should be no electricity connected.
Then press the power button and keep your finger on it for about 30 seconds to release any build up electricity.
Plug in the adaptor and battery again and see if there is still a problem.
Maybe is a good idea to get a surge protector in the future.
Regards,
Purito

How to install cd rom in sony vgn-fs980

Pretty simple. There is only one screw on the bottom of the laptop that secures the cd. Remove the screw, pull out the module, and replace with a new one. Don't forget to put the retainer screw back in.
