Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I can get to the Orange website on Internet Exployer without problem, but cannot get any where else. If I then enter another address in the address box, e.g. www.ebay.com, I get a message saying 'website found, waiting for reply'. After a wait this changes to 'Done , but with errors on page' and that's as far as I get. Any ideas?

WANT TO MAKE ASK MY HOMEPAGE

In Internet Explorer. Go to Tools in the upper left hand corner, then in that box click internet options at the bottom. A box will pop open.

In the top of that box will be an address. Delete it and type www.ask.com then hit ok at the bottom. Do not hit apply, hit ok. Should be good to go. Open a new webpage to make sure it stuck.

As a side note, if you don't see the line on top of your screen that says file, view, favorites, tools, and help do this...right click with your mouse on the top of the page ABOVE (not in) the address bar and make sure "menu bar" is checked.

Good Luck

Block website

There can be any number of reasons for you to want to block a particular website.
It might be a known malicious site or a website with pages containing inappropriate material.
Whatever the reason, you can block a website (or group of websites) with just a few mouse clicks using the built in functions of your browser.
Some browsers, however, such as Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, have built-in features to do just that, while others, such as Mozilla Firefox, require an additional tool.

Start the browser and click the "Tools" menu option.
Select "Internet Options," click the "Privacy" tab then "Sites."

Type the website URL in the "Address of website" box and click "Block" in the "Per Site Privacy Actions" window.
Click "OK" and then "OK" again to save the new settings.

Google Chrome

Start the browser and click the wrench icon in the top right corner of the window.

Select "Tools" and click "Under the Hood."
Select "Change Proxy Settings," click "Security" tab and double-click the "Restricted Sites" icon.
Click "Sites," type in the website URL and click "Add."
Close all windows.

Discreetly Block a Website
If you find a friend, co-worker or your child has visited websites that cause problems on your computer, such as pop-up ads, viruses or just slowing down your computer, you will want to block those sites so they can't be accessed.
Browsers come equipped with privacy or security settings that allow you to block websites, but they don't always work well and are easy to undo.
Instead, find your computer's Host file and add the offending websites to that file.
Those sites will be blocked and, if you make the file password inaccessible, others who use your computer won't be able to undo the changes you have made.

Click "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of your computer screen, or click on the Windows emblem.
Choose "All Programs," "Accessories," then "Command Prompt."
A screen will appear.
Type "notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts" where the cursor is located, without the quotation marks.
Don't move the cursor first, just start typing.
The Host file will open in a Notepad screen.

Look for the line that says: "127.0.0.1 localhost," without the quotation marks. Under that line, enter the IP address and the name of the website you wish to block, separated by at least one space. If you wish to block more than one website, list each on an individual line.
For instance, if you wanted to block Facebook, you would type on a single line:
69.63.184.142 www.facebook.com

Save the file after you have added all the websites you wish to block.
After saving it, close the file and close the command prompt screen.

Locating IP Addresses

Use the Ping command to find out the IP address of a website. On the lower left-hand corner of your screen, click on "Start." Choose "All Programs." Select "Accessories." Choose "Command Prompt."

Type "ping www.food.com" without the quotation marks.
Press the "Enter" key. A list of IP addresses will appear for that website.
High-traffic websites such as Facebook will often have a range of IP addresses.
Copy and paste the IP addresses to a separate page, such as Notepad, and save them.

Go back to the command prompt and type in the command described above for locating the Host file.
Enter each IP address and the name of the website on a separate line.
If you have six IP addresses for one site, for instance, you'll have a different IP address but the same website URL on each line.

Is it hard to get access to yahoo on a brand new computer? It has Windows 7.

No it is not hard to get access to Yahoo on any computer. How do you get Yahoo? You open an internet browser (like internet explorer or Firefox ect.) and wait for the website to load, then you go to the top of the page where the address of that website is listed and delete the address. The address looks like http://www. . After you delete the address, type this in instead http://www.yahoo.com and press the enter key on your keyboard. That will take you to Yahoo. Yahoo is free on the internet.

I hope this helps?

Good luck!

Explorer will not open, it either freezes and does not respond or it crashes.

Is this Internet Explorer or File Explorer? If its Internet Explorer then try this:

Goto Start > Run
in the Run box type 'explorer' without the quotes
in the address bar of explorer type in the website address you are trying to go to.

If that works then you need to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer or better yet uninstal IE and install FireFox.

I have trouble browsing the internet. I often get this message: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

You might be having a DNS problem. DNS (Domain name system) is responsible for changing the website name to the address (where the website is stored). You can try openDNS (www.opendns.com) The site can be confusing so here are the instructions. 1. Go to control panel > network connections 2. Choose the connection that gives you internet, right click on it and Click properties 3. Now select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties 4. Check the box that says "Use the following DNS addresses" 5. Enter the following values (addresses) 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220

I have (stupidly) disabled the NAT feature of my Belkin wireless G router, without specifying an IP address to access it, and so can get no access to the wireless network from any pc. Is there a way to...

to turn the NAT feature back on in the belkin router, just reset it.

And you can always tell what address (known as the gateway address) access the router, which ip,

by clicking start, run, and then type cmd and click 'OK'

in the black window that pops up, type 'ipconfig' without the commas and hit enter on your keyboard

look for the default gateway

if nat was on, or after you reset it,

its 192.168.2.1

type 192.168.2.1 in the address bar of internet explorer to access the router

most routers default password is ither admin , or password

spin

.
