I have. Kenmore comerical referigerator 253.44723100. The coils freeze. Keeps a pretty consistant temp of 43. If I defrost will work for a few days then temp climbs back up.

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You should not have to defrost manually. You have a automatic defrost cycle. Every 8-10 hours your unit should shut down for 20-30 minutes, except for the light. This is when your defrost heater turns on. Afterwards, the freezer turns back on.

The defrost heater is on the bottom of your cooling coil behind the back lower wall.

Part #: 216730700 Cost: $43.00

You also have Refrigerator Bi-metal Defrost Thermostat. Cost $27.00. At times the back of this component will pop out and fail.
25592992-wte2ibsdwpcevewvzivs5fqb-2-2.jpg You also have a defrost mechanical timer. This is located in the lower back behind a metal plate with a slotted hole through it. You can trip the freezer into the defrost mode. Taking a large screw driver turn the stem slowly clockwise one click at a time until the unit shuts down. After 30 minutes repeat this process to turn the unit back on, until you get a new timer.

Notice the slotted hole on the left.

You may also defrost by unplugging the freezer for 24 hours. Have plenty of old towels handy. Plug the unit back in and after 12 hours you will be back to your desired temperature.

Top freezer not cold fan isn't always on either

Hello Fred;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I have a top freezer because they are the most reliable and least expensive to repair.

It sounds like one of several problems:

Unplug your unit. Remove the back panel of your freezer. You may

1.) Frozen drain - Your unit will go through a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. When this occurs, your unit will shut down for 20-30 minutes and your defrost heater will turn on. Everything will shut down except for your lights. Then your unit turns back on.

There is a drain hole behind your freezer back wall. This is easily unplugged with warm water. If the drain hole is plugged up with ice your cooling coil will become blocked up. This may also prevent your cooling coil fan from running.

2.) Cooling fan is starting to go - If your cooling coils are not plugged up and ice is not restricting your cooling coil fan, then perhaps your fan is starting to go. This is a easy replacement. Lets check - You need a multi-meter to do this. You can purchase one for about $25.00 at Lowes or Home Depot. This is a good thing to have. It will save you a lot of money with repair on all of your appliances.
Set the multi-meter to the lowest Ohms (Omega Symbol) With your unit unplugged, You have three wires to the motor. Disconnect them all. The small one is a ground wired, the other 2 are power wires. Put one meter lead on the one motor contactor and the other lead on the other contactor. You should get a reading of "0" Ohms if the motor is good. Anything else the motor the motor is bad.

There is a temperature sensor on the upper right hand side of your cooling coil. If the back of this round 3/8" diameter sensor has exploded, them you need a new sensor.

Give me a model number on your fresh food section side wall near the top and I can be more specific. Call be @ 443-306-1362 and we can take it from there.

What causes the compressor to quit working?

Most likely the thermistor inside the compressor is shutting the unit off to keep it from burning out. No fridge should run for that long no matter how cold you want it to be inside. If all the door gaskets are sealing properly your most likely problem is the thermostat is bad and not sensing the temp, thus the unit keeps running.If your doors are not closing properly (alignment or gaskets) same issue will occur. Check alignment and gaskets using dollar bill. Close bill between door frame and gasket, pull bill out slowly should feel resistance, if not door is crooked or gasket needs adjournment or door gasket is bad.Do this on all doors all the way around to locate problem areas.

Freezer and frige blowing warm air. The unit is a 6 year old side by side. Is it worth calling a repair man or just replacing? Thank You Oh the motor still runs and I hear a sound as if the compressor...

To start a new check it will be good to shut off the fridge for about 8 hours, Now during this period clean the set and check the thermostat , the compressor relay mounted on it.
When the power is switched the compressor must click and start up, if not check relay and capacitor of the motor.
When the compressor runs for about 2 hours there must be coooling, if not the compressor is faulty or the gas pressure is down.
It must be estimated and decided.

your rtc overload on the compressor is getting weak and drops out and this shuts power off to unit and you need to replace it,its plugged into the side of the compressor located in the lower rear of the unit,simply unplug frige,access the compressor,remove retainer spring,unplug rtc overload and replace it

Freezer works Refrigerator will not cool down

The compressor should be OK this time because you caught it in time. But if the condenser fan stops you need to consider replacing the fan. I have had refrigerators do fine until the fan motor warms up and you are away, it stops. Don't think you should use the refrigerator until the fan is fixed. Sea Breeze

Refrigerator not colling properly

Let it run until you have a problem again then look at the back wall of the inside of the freezer, if there is frost then it's not defrosting and that would be your problem (usually the defrost heater). If you don't see frost then you need to determine if the compressor is running or not. It's possible to hear the two fans run, but not the compressor. If the compressor is running, along with the 2 fans, then it is a sealed system problem and usually not worth fixing. If it's not running you'll need to check the compressor start relay on the side of the compressor. It is possible for a bad compressor to cause the relay to fail, so replacing it may or may not get you going again.

compressor or sealed system issue compressor is failing or a problem in the sealed syetem is putting a back pressure onto the comperssor causing the compressor to eventualy kick of on the internal overload in the compressor, cools down as you unplug the unit allowing the compressor to cool down resets the internal overload runs and repeats the process

have the unit checed by a quilified tech in ref sealed system repair

Kenmore side by side not cooling after a move

go to the back of the fridge see if it has a white relay on the compressor that's the piece that plugs onto the compressor if it does un plug the unit take it off and shake it if it rattles and little black stuff falls out of it replace it with a three in one relay from an appliance repair parts store just follow the instructions on the part its easy don't worry about water in the ice maker it will fill when it starts cooling if it doesn't have the relay try turning it off for 24 hours to give the oil time to run back down to the compressor and advise me further
