Question about Plumbing

Condensate pump on humidifer/ac

I have a hartell auto condensate pump which this time of yearisservicing the humidifier (also drains from central air unit insummer). noticed puddles on floor, and the unit's not shutting off, butnowater was coming through the drain tubing. the fan continues torunconstantly, so i'm assuming the motor is working and there is aclogsomewhere?

    thanks, i removed the pump and cleaned and tested it in the laundry sink, and it pumps, and also switches off, so it looks like the tubing might be the problem, which is nice because it's the cheapest part of the system. going out to hardware store, wish me luck!

To me it sounds like a tube is plugged so where, It also might be the switch is going bad on this unit.

Jet Well Pump Well Jet Water Pump

One of the most frustrating things in plumbing can be the priming of a jet well pump. Well jet water pumps are sometimes difficult to get working properly because it is very difficult to get all of the air out of the system and the pump. Well domestic water systems are great for those that need them but you need to know how to approach the air removal part.

Here are some things that will help you prime both deep well jet pumps and shallow well jet pumps.

  1. Always install a tee and a valve at a high point directly above the outlet of the pump. This will give you a place to pour water in and allow the air to get out easily.
  2. Always install a “throttling” valve on the “out” side of the pump. This will let you keep back pressure on the pump. This is especially needed for deep well applications.
  3. Install a switch close to the pump to make starting and stopping the pump easy.
  4. Make sure that the “suction” pipe coming to the pump runs continuously uphill and is not trapped anywhere.
  5. Make sure that the suction pipe is at least as large as the intake fitting on the pump.
  6. Make sure that all fittings on the suction pipe are air tight

To prime the pump begin by filling the pump and suction pipe slowly with water, allowing the air to escape as you fill. This may take quite a bit of water depending on the size and length of the pipe.
When you can get no more water to go in the pipe, then close the valve on the fill and start the pump with the “out valve” closed or mostly closed. If the pump starts to go on and off rapidly, open the out valve just a bit more, till the pumps runs continuously.
If the pump starts to pump and then stops because of an air pocket, then you may need to restart the whole procedure and add more water. Keep doing this till all of the air is worked out of the system. For some systems this can be a long and laborious procedure.
Keep working the procedure and eventually you will have your system pumping.

Well Pressure Switch Adjustment Water Well Problems

1fa4b10.jpgIf you have a water well to supply your water needs, then you also have a well pump is some form and a well pressure switch that controls the water well pump and the pressures that it turns on and off at. Making the adjustments to this switch can be confusing, I will try to take away some of the confusion for you. There are many types of well pressure switches made. I will describe the adjustment of the most common type of switch and you can possibly translate from there if you have a different type of well pump pressure switch.

  1. Turn off the power to the well pump before making any adjustments. The blue flash from the arc when you short out the power is scary and leaves you seeing stars for a time.
  2. Drain all of the water pressure from the system and check that you have air pressure in your well pump pressure tank. If you intend to set the cut in of the pump at 30 PSI then make sure there is 28 PSI in the air part of the tank. Always 2 PSI less than your cut in pressure.
  3. Start the pump, run water, and then observe the pressures as the pump starts and stops. Remove power when adjusting to avoid the blue flash…you are working in close proximity to the electrical contacts of the switch.
  4. To raise the cut in pressure turn the taller center nut down to increase the spring pressure. This will start the pump at a higher pressure. To lower the start pressure turn the nut up or counter clockwise.
  5. To change the differential pressure, the difference between the start and stop pressures, you need to adjust the smaller nut that is on the side of the pressure switch. Turning this nut down will increase the differential pressure and likewise turning this nut counter clockwise or up will lower the differential pressure.

This process can take some time, but it will be worth it to have your pump and water system operating efficiently. You also can set the well water pressures to your liking.
This is a basic guide to help you fine tune your water well pump and your well pump pressure tank, along with your water pump pressure switch, so that they all work together to give you a good stable supply of well water.

Pressure switch cycles on off

Check your pressure tank, sounds like bladder has a leak. Unscrew cap on valve on pressure tank (looks like valve on car tire where you add air to tire) turn cap upside down and use, or small screwdriver to depress valve, if water comes out bladder has burst and replace pressure tank. If not then check bladder pressure with tire gauge. Correct settings are clearly posted on pump. Then add air to pressure tank or remove air to correct pressure. Use a accurate pressure gauge.

hello diesel. You are on target. It could be that the foot valve has sand in it preventing it from closing thus pumping but no water. Pulling the well will most likely be necessary. Good luck with it. Joe

Well Pump Problems The Water Well Tank

2811e7c.jpgOne of the common problems with having a well for you water supply is that you have the maintenance of the water pump and the related things that are necessary to make that all work. One of the most important parts of that system is the water well tank or the water pump tank. This tank is what keeps the well pump from having to turn on and off every time you draw a few drops of water.

In the past the tanks were made with an air valve that injected just a bit of air into the tank every time the pump started. This helped to keep some air in the tank and also gave the annoying problem of air coming out of the faucet at times. To make this better well water pump tanks are now made with a diaphragm that separates the air from the water.
This keeps the water cushion trapped inside the tank. That is great and makes the well tank virtually maintenance free as long as there are not holes in the rubber bladder that separates the water and the air.

There are some easy ways to tell if your well pump tank is not working the way that is should work. And also here are some things that you can do to maximize the capacity of the tank.
  1. Drain all the water pressure out of your system. Then check the air pressure in your tank and adjust it to 2 PSI below the cut in pressure of your pump.
  2. Make sure that your pressure switch is giving you 20 PSI differential between the cut in and the cut out of your pump.
  3. Make sure that your tank is big enough to give you at least 2 minutes run time when your pump starts till it stops.

Now for pressure tank not working
  1. The pump starts and stops rapidly while you are drawing water. This means the bladder has failed in the tank and you have no air in the pressure tank. Replace your pressure tank.
  2. You get a slight hesitation as you are drawing water before the pump. This means that you have too much air in the tank and you need to release some air or increase the cut in pressure on the pressure switch.
  3. If in the summer time you see condensation more than halfway up the side of the tank then you have a bad tank. The tank should never be more than about half full of water. Replace the well pressure tank.

One note to consider. If you are not drawing water and your pressure drops rapidly when the well pump shuts off then it is NOT a pressure tank problem, it is a problem with the check valve in the pump.

This should give you a basic trouble shooting guide to your well water tank or water pressure pump tank.

I have used 3 gal of draino max gel in the course of 2 months on my bathtub it worked great the first time but has clogged since and will eventually drain but VERY VERY slow i leave it for about 2 hours...

the drain is still partially plugged. what I do is blow out the drain with compreesed air. I made a fitting for my air compressor for this. this works best!! just 1 or two blasts should clean drain. unless it is very bad.

Sewer gas smell every time the tub is emptyed

If you are getting a gas smell when the tub is emptied it is because you either do not have a big enough vent pipe or your vent pipe is plugged.
I have seen cases where a vent pipe has sagged enough to trap condensate and rain water and plug that way. Find what is the actual cause can be difficult and time comsuming. Often times the cause is hidden over a ceiling or behins a wall.
I have fixed them already but installing a "cheater vent" or "Studor" vent under a vanity cabinet that is close to the tub. These vents are just a one way valve that will let air into the line but not back out.
Your problem is because when the water goes down it replaces some air with water volume. That air comes bubbles back up the piping and creates a smell.

Safety water drain open on my Trauma Heater

It sounds like the solenoid in the valve is not working. Try pulling up the valve manually and holding it in place with a cable tie. this should give an effective repair. Bear in mind that this will not then automatically drain the system in the event of freezing weather.
