Question about Dell E176FP 17" LCD Monitor

Open Question

Dell E176FP 17" LCD problem, screen periodically cycling colors..

Our Dell E176FP 17" LCD monitor works for a time after the computer is powered up, then turns dark, and begins to cycle through colors - red, green, blue, then black, then colors again. At first I thought it was a default screen saver, but changing those settings didn't fix the problem - and it doesn't go away when we touch the mouse, use keyboard keys, or otherwise do the things that would bring it out of screen saver, hibernation, etc.

The only thing that fixes it temporarily is to unplug the power for a bit - it won't power off with the power button - and then plug it back in, but this problem returns some time later. As far as we can tell, we are still able to use the computer, we just can't see the desktop or program - for instance we can exit out of programs using keystrokes, and shut it down using the windows key, but only if we know which keys to use to get it to shut down.

Is the monitor dying, or is this some other problem? We had thought it might be the video card, and needed to upgrade in any case, so we did. At first we thought this had fixed the problem, as it did not reoccur for some time after this, but then began again. Could it be a problem with the motherboard?

Thanks in advance.

well that could be because the screen is going bad. you might want to get another one or take it in to get it fixed, no more than 100 to fix your screen.

You may loose connections at the end of the VGA cable, or video card not seated tightly. I would check that first.

See if the set has some sort of reset button. If none do a hard reset on monitor to hopefully clear the cobwebs in monitor electronics and see what happens.

My monitor (Dell, 17", flat screen, about 2 years old)has recently started changing colors spontaneously. This happens whether the computer is on or not. It cycles through a bright yellow screen to bight...

they can do this if the monitor is shorting its self, might just need a dust out with a paint brush, while you have the back of the monitor check the main-av-power board and look for signs of weak capacitors this can also cause the same faults.

Monitor problem

Try unplugging the video cord from the computer.
If it does the same thing then it is not detecting your cord.
If so, try a new cord.

What does it say on the screen if the above does not fix it.
