I wen t to Dell website and did search for 1501 Inspiron laptop. After I found the product, I entered "black screen" and did another search. The search brought up 3 problems. One of them had several of the problems I had encountered, including black screen, horizontal lines, blue screen at times.
The solution was to download and update my Video driver. This seems to have solved my issues.

Hey there,

you have to restore your side cause you have adware and or spyware on you system.. you have to do a complete system recovery. it is best to let your computer format and delete all files..make sure you save you data that you want on to a zip or flash drive if you want it saved.. and make sure you do all your windows update..

1501 freeze randomly. put it on cool stand to eliminate overheating, still freezes ie: goes black and has a 1 inch square color lined area.

if you can take out the hard drive
would it still do the same thing
if the hard drive is over 5 years old
chances are you need to replace,
also system restore set back to when it worked good, and reinstall windows before buying new hard drive

Hi Erika,

have you tried pressing F8 when it starts booting (keep pressing it before dell bios screen fully loads)

you should get a black screen with options,

scroll up to with arrow keys>> "last known good configeration"

let me know if that works?

also have you installed any programs or hardware befor this happened?
