My e-Machine freezes a couple seconds after windows starts up

Hello, My e-machine comp, about 5 years of age freezes everytime I turn it on, like it gets to my wallpaper and all my programs and freezes after 4 seconds. I have to manually turn it off and on, off and on, like 10 times in a row I am repeating this off and on thing and still no resuslts. On top of that I just reformatted my hold Hard Drive about 2 weeks ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanx

I just ran it in safe mode and signed in as Admin, it seems to be working fine in safe mode.

Yes, since I reformatted my hard drive ac couple weeks ago I installed every update up to WIndows XP Service Pack 3 and a couple after that, I have also installed program like Azereus Vuze and bitTorrent.

  • beachsocal Dec 09, 2008

Ok, I went to safe mode and did a system restore which got rid of Azereus and BitTorrent and a couple other softwares. After I did that it started up fine, I started browsing the web again when randomly it freezes up again. I restart it, it starts fine I browse for a while (for about 1-2 hours) or 30 minutes and it randomly freezes again. Seems to me that I have only fixed half the problem, fixing the freezing for good still lies ahead of me. :(

You may have a driver or software problem.

What software have you recently installed?

    Any Windows updates from Microsoft?

File share programs like bittorrent and Azereus Vuze are notorius for messing with your system .. try unimstalling them both and see how it goes

Try disabling your antivirus and just as a test disconnect your PC from the internet - i.e. remove the cat5 cable or disable wireless depending on your situation

I would check the CPU fan .. also check to make sure that none of the capacitors are either leaking or raised .. you may have a heat problem ... also be sure that the power supply fan is working

Even if you re-formatt, unless you do an F-Disk first, if there is a virus in the drive, it is posssible that it is still there, especially if you re installed some of the stuff that was on the old Operating system. There is also a possibility that you could have a virus in the memory. See if you can boot into safe mode and run AVG pro. I just ran in to this similar problem on a clients laptop, brand new. There is a new virus called the Ispy, or variables of it that are in the actual virus program. Also try Lavasoft adware remover pro, if you are able to boot in Safe mode. By the way its either F7 or F8 that you need to tap "not hold down" while booting up. Try that and get back to me if it worked. It drove me nuts for a day until I realised what had happened, I have access to many virus programs, I had Avast pro in there and it wouldn't make a dent in removing it. It also could be your Video card drivers, so check that you have the latest ones first. If you know how to clear the cmos, then do that also. Sometimes your startup files get corrupted and need to be cleared. You do that by moving the jumper on the board, which should be next to the mB battery, good luck.

Are you going to the same sight where you got the virus last time, or installing from programs you backed up, if so perhaps you are re infecting the machine. When you are in safemode, thats where you have to run the virus program, go here www.hashhu.com , or Smarthackerz.com and get a copy of "lavasofts adware pro edition, the guys in there will be glad to help, you will need to sign up, and it's free, use the avg virus program, the pro version, and between those two you should get rid of just about anything, Peace, Gym

Try exploring three things which may occur if you also opened the case and/or did any internal hardware change--probably number one.

1. Could be the machine is overheating
a. check to ensure fans are working
b. check cpu heatsink is flush, and you are using thermal compond

2. Is machine properly grounded?

3. Is every device properly powered?
When installing a video card, it often needs additional power- check the intalltion guide.

Freezing

Firstly i would suggest unindtalling the programme and installing again. To give a clue as to what the problem is, go to Control Panel>Performance & Maintanence>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer. On the left hand side, look down the list to Applcations and click on it; and look at the dates when you ran the programme to give a clue as to the fault.
