Hard drive switching (dead one to new one)

I have a Maxtor diamondMax 21 (New) Hard drive to install but the plugs in the pc dont match the new hard drive. How can I hook it up or what do i need to do to hook it up?

Your computer comes with an Sata hard drive. I am guessing that you have purchased a IDE one. If sio , return the IDE drive in exchange for an Sata one. He is the manufactures web site for your machine:

Did you replace the old hard drive with a new one?
Check the connections on the drive itself. When you plugged the new one in, there should have been two cables you plugged into it. 1 small one that goes to the motherboard (called the SATA cable), and one wider one which comes right out of the power supply. If either of these is not plugged into the hard drive, you would get a message that says "could not find drive".

Check your connections and try again. If they're ok, then write back with as much detail as you can provide.

I am sorry to inform you that is not correct. If I am not mistaken this is your drive.

My dell 6400i won't boot


Yes I read it and I've seen it. When you connect your hard drive back into the controller socket on the motherboard there is a pin 1, that must match up with pin 1 on the slot. The pin is normally a different color..if you don't put it back with matching pin 1's then it will not work, it'll act dead. So double check your plug in from the hard drive back to the motherboard. Mark,
You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.

There are a lot of Maxtor drives that are bad. Suggest you download Maxtors (MaxBlast 5) utilities software to check the drive. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/maxtor_desktop/
OR you can also run Seagates software on you're Maxtor drive. Seagate bought Maxtor. Download SeaTools for DOS.

For Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA drives:

If this is a Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA or SATA drive, please download the SeaTools for DOS diagnostic to test it. If the drive is failing, the tests in SeaTools for DOS will indicate as such.

If the BIOS does not recognize the drive or the drive does not spin please reference Answer ID: 48

The operating system will not recognize a drive that is not formatted and partitioned. If you need help with formatting:

    Maxtor harddrive jumper setting


    If you only have a single hard drive (or multiple hard drives for that matter), you should leave the jumper setting as "Cable Select" or CS.

    dont think you need a driver unless you are installing it in a raid ...the purpose of sata was to elliminate hdd jumpers and configuration ... just go into the bios and make sure the sata channels are enabled

    Hard Drive Problems


    I suspect that the ribbon cable (seatbelt looking cable) in the computer has possibly come loose. Especially if both HDD's can't be seen.

    Possible too that the CMOS has lost the specifications of the HDDs. Press F2 or DEL key while booting (depends on the CMOS/computer type).

    Or, both hard drives have gone bad, which is unlikely that both at the same time went out.
