My usb ports don't work on my dell mini 10

Look for any drivers missing, in the device manager.

You will probably need, the chipset driver, to make the usb port work.

You will also need service pack 1, to support the usb function.

usb mice don't last long it may say 5-10 years or more but they don't and you may have to plug it in a diff. usb port if you have one

XP usually loads usb drivers and some ethernet drivers.

If you have access to another computer copy the drivers onto a flash drive and try to install them from it.


If you have internet access with the mini 10 you can download them from dell support.

The best option is, look around for external cd-rom with usb connection, and reformat the laptop.You need to go into the bios and change the boot order to make your usb cd-rom to first in the boot list. Once the usb cd-rom is plugged into used port, with operation system cd in it, on your laptop..press F2..go into the bios, to the boot order make your usb cd-rom on top boot list,,then save changes to exit the bios. Once again the system reboots..with message PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD ROM.. so just simple steps to follow..its not going to be expensive..good luck

Please add more information to get specific assistance. Are these wireless devices? If wired, do they use USB or PS/2 connections.

For wireless devices, try replacing the batteries and resynching to the receiver. (You may want to check putting the receiver in different USB ports.)

For wired devices, disconnect and reconnect. For PS/2 devices, you will need to restart the computer to check if the devices work. For USB devices, try connecting to different USB ports.

Next step, try using a different keyboard and mouse (that work on another computer (stick to USB or PS/2 to match the current pair)). Try a wired set if the problem is with a wireless pair. If those work, continue diagnostics on the wireless keyboard and mouse. Check if the mouse and keyboard work on another computer. If they don't work with another computer, replace them.

If another USB keyboard and mouse pair don't work in any port, your USB ports may have failed. Check if even one port works enough to access the Device Manager. (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager (Win7); similar directions in other versions of Windows) Check for a problem with the drivers (For USB ports, scroll down to the USB drivers and look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or red x). Try to update the driver or roll it back. If that doesn't help and one USB port works, a USB hub may solve the problem.

Otherwise if the USB or PS/2 ports do not work with any devices and the driver fix doesn't work, then I'd suspect a problem with the ports on the motherboard. Replace the motherboard/computer.

This usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty. First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Next - to check if the harddrive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an USB mass storage device and you cannot open the various folders and fileson this drive, then this confirms the hard drive is faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.
