Temperature control problems with GE refrigerator

Model ZFSB26DNA SS side by side refrigerator. Have set fresh food temperature selector to 40 but actual temp is at 27. Produce freezes up and ice forms in milk, juices, etc. Cannot get refrigerator to maintain selected temperature. Have not made any inputs to Express Thaw, Express Chill, or Select Temp on Custom Cool panel. In addition, water dispenser is not working even after following all troubleshooting fixes listed in manual.

I have a similar problem. My produce keeps freezing, and water dispenser suddenly will not work. I have been researching on www.applianceblog.com and trying to see if there is anyone else that can solve this.

I have the same problem, along with our ice maker not working. Not sure if the problems are all connected. But I'm getting tired of my produce freezing. I have tried changing the settings but with no luck. Have you been able to find anything out?

SOURCE: Items sometimes freeze on refrigerator side of unit - model GSS25LGMA

It is most likely a bad damper motor.  This is where the cool air comes out into the fridge section.  On this model it is a fairly common problem and comes a whole assembly.  The part # is WR49X10091 and will cost anywhere from $100 to $122.  Knowing this model I would bet this is your problem.  If the damper is bad and stuck open cold air will just keep blowing in.  It is suppose to open and close based on the temp setting.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

SOURCE: GE Profile Arctica model # PSS25NGMD - can't control temperature

Check the little damper door next the water filter at top inside the unit. You will have to remove the covers to get it. The little plastic ends will break off and then you can not control the temperture it act like a freezer. Hope this helps Also you can get this part online.

PSC23NSTESS FREEZING VEGTABLES

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.
Freezer on Top Models
First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

Fresh food side is running too cold (Liquids freezing), regardless of temperature control settings. G E Model GSS20IETE

There is a vent opening on the bottom or in the back. Make sure it is not one sided or blocked with items since the temperature settings make no difference. This is all it can be.

Refrigerator is too cold (28 degrees)

this is likely one of the thermistors on the fresh food side has failed. They are usually located under a small cover inside the fridge. They should have a reading of 15.5k-16.5k ohms at 72 degrees. They are easy to check and replace. Here is a link that should help. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. http://appliancehelponline.com/sxsfreshthermistor.html

Temperature does not go below 59 deg. refrigerator side.

Auto Damper models, The Auto Damper model refrigerator has
two controls and both have capillary sensing.
The Auto Damper controls the fresh
food temperature and the Freezer Temperature
Control guides the freezer temperature.
The fresh food compartment temperature
is maintained by a damper assembly located
at the back of the temperature control
housing. Changes in air temperature
cause the damper door to open and close.
A control rod and gear connect the fresh
food control knob to the damper control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to the
COLDEST position increases the flow of
freezer air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a faster rate and cools at a slower
rate, increasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to a
WARMER setting decreases the flow of
chilled air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a slower rate and cools at a faster
rate, decreasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
It is ver possible that the auto damper has failed and will need to be cosidered as a likely cause. Side-by-Side: Refrigerator will not maintain temp below 50 Deg. Freezer works fine - where is the problem? Model Number MSD2757AE

Your problem may be with:

* the "damper control assembly", which is located in the upper left side of the fresh food compartment. This control regulates the amount of cold air originating from the freezer compartment that enters the fresh food compartment.
* there may be an issue with the "fresh food temperature control assembly"

Check the temperature settings in the fresh food compartment (should be located up front). I recommend the "one-half way mark" for both freezer and fresh food compartments.

Contact an appliance service company.

Erratic temperature control. Freezer temperature varies from -4 to +2 even though set to -1, refrigerator also with wide variation. refrigerator is about 2.5 years old and this is a new problem.

Unles this is a big change and is not affecting the fresh food sect temperatures. Those should be 38 degrees for food safety. As far as the temperatures measurements those are easily altered by placing articles of packages near the thermistors in freezer and fresh food compartment. There are many issues you need to consider with the model refrigerator Artic/Profile. They are very sensitive to power surge and simple failures. Hopefully your being only 2.5 years out GE has resolved the problems of the past.GE is a good company and they do support their customers through the 5 year sealed system replacement. There are very many models of your type. Could you send me the model number listed for example PSS26MRSS. If you could I will get you some information that can help you save you repair cost in the end, Now if there is a problem with the thermistors we will need to resolve that because it will cause more problems later. Thanks Sea Breeze
