Hard drive not detected

I recently replace an hdd that i was using in this same system only to realise that the mb cannot detect the hd. the hd works perfectly in another system. this drive is setup as a slave on the secondary ide connector, with a master on the primary. i even tried detecting it from the bios but it only see's my master c drive. i also used another good drive in its stead but the mb see's the drive but it does not show up in windows explorer. i'm using windows 2000. please can someone help me. thanks for your time.

Re: hard drive not detected

Hi, have you tried changing the IDE Cable & tried the cable connected to Primary IDE & Seconary IDE Slot on the motherboard by disconnecting any other devices including cdrom etc? as it should give you a idea of which is at fault All the best John

Re: hard drive not detected

Rickyrudy, I suspect one of the following may work: -The problem drive is set as the slave on the secondary IDE channel. If it?s the only drive change it to the master. -Try checking the drive setup setting in the BIOS, make sure both drives are set to auto detect in the BIOS. If this works don?t forget to try setting the unused drive setting to none to speed up the boot process. -If you are using jumpers to define the master and slave double check the settings against the chart on the drive in question. -If you?re using cable select to define master/slave drives try using the jumpers instead. Let us know if this works and please don?t forget to rate this posting.

MB MSI K8MM-V, Unable to detect 80 GB primary HDD. What need to be done ? Update Bios ? Which one ? Ravi

If the BIOS cannot detect the 80Gb hard disk then it is probably faulty.
Make sure the jumper on the hard drive is set to MA (master), if this doesn't work set it to CS (cable select) If it still isn't detected by the BIOS then the hard disk is faulty and you need a new hard disk.

Sata hdd recognized intermittenly and installation sometimes sata hdd detected and sometimes lost halfway

Try disconnecting the hd from the motherboard, then reboot.

Shut down all power to pc unplug from wall, then reconnect hd,restart pc.

Be sure that in the bios settings your hd is set for autodetection,if there is a sata option just use auto.

Hi dear Expert. I Have my MB ASUS M2A-VM HDMI. SATA1(0) was connected with HDD Samsung 320Gb. SATA2(1) was connected with CD drive. Other ports spare. Now by commecting new HD Samsung 1Tb on SATA3(2)...

If the new Drive is setup on a different channel than the First HDD and CD then it should be set to Master. In the Bios you probably need to activate the second SATA channel so the Auto Detect Function can work. You also need to check that the MB can support a drive that size. Not all MB will support an HDD of that size. Aside from the Obvious of checking all your cable connection to insure that they are all solid the only other thing I would recommend is that you switch the CD and new HDD positions. Put both HD's on the same SATA channel and the CD on the Separate channel. This would require making 1 HD a Master and the other a Slave and changing the CD to a Master since it will have it's own Channel. Second, try remove all but the New HDD from the system. Set the New HDD up as the only HDD and see if the BIOS will see and allow you to select it. If it will not there is a problem either with the size of the HD or with the HD itself.

Mine is a Dell Dimension XPS D233. I need to know to which data cable plug on the board each cable from a drive connects. There is a Hard Drive, Floppy Zip and CD. Are there any cables that need that...

Double check the cables for your hard drive. That will be the Hdd cable.

make sure the pins fit to the hole. After that check if it is detected if not.

Load defaults in BIOS. If it still doesn't detect it try using another cable for

the hard drive if you have already done that try using another hard drive.

If that works then it only means you need to replace you hard drive.

Longer Boot time after upgrading the Hard drive

first let's determine if the upgrade cause the boot speed.

Disconnect your NEW HDD and/or memory, one by one and see if you get back your fast boot. Then try with your NEW components only !

If you find it works better with new components only, then first connect your OLD HDD only and try.

If you connect both HDDs on one cable, check Jumper settings for both HDDs (Master/Slave).

Also HDD capacity and type is automatically detected by the BIOS and there is no need to put/change those settings manually.

I believe you new RAM is DDR type, too!
As written in the manual for the board, your motherboard has two pairs of memory slots, and you can use one or two modules of DDR memory, OR one or two modules of SDRAM memory, but you can NOT put BOTH DDR and SDRAM memory modules.

I want to install RHEL3.0 in SATA DeskStart HD using MSI SATA MB, but not detecting at OS installation time. HOW i can detect, Pls help me!!!!

You need to create a space for which to install Linux. That likely means resizing Windows. Partition Magic is a good Windows utility to accomplish this, although there is a Linux version called Gaprtedthat will do essentially the same thing. You download the Gparted live cd, burn to disk, and run it from your computer. You must go into "setup" and set your Bios to boot from CDROM before booting the Hard Drive. Once booted, follow the on screen instructions. Resize Windows, (but NOT before a thorough defrag of your Windows drive), and create a "blank space" for Linux. Afterward, boot your Linux distro, (RedHat 9 was a great distro, but a newer version of a Red Hat based distro would serve you better, sayCentOS or Fedora Core), and follow the online instructions. Good Luck!
