Incompatible Cartridge messgae

I'm getting a message that says Incompatible Print Cartridges.  I am using new HP #74 & 75 cartridges, have cleaned surfaces, made sure they are snapped in correctly, etc.

I'm also getting the "Incompatible Print Cartridge(s)" message... Cleaned the contacts as the HP Support suggests... Nothing...

We are facing a similar problem having 12 cartridges of 74 XL and 75 XL. This seems to be one more trick from HP to cheat vthe public - as it is we are paying fancy high prices for the cartridges

SOURCE: remove and check color cartridge error

i was woundering are these new cartages or refiled ?
cause our wont work with refilled caratages

so this is how i found that out !

Issue After you install a print cartridge, the scan, copy, and fax lights begin to flash at the same time. The printer will not print. One of the following error messages may display on the control panel:

  • Color or Right Print Cartridge is not compatible
  • Incorrect Print Cartridge(s)
  • Print Cartridge Problem
  • Incorrectly Installed Cartridge(s)
  • Black or Color Cartridge(s) Failed
Solution Follow the steps below until the above issue is resolved. All of the following steps may not be necessary to resolve the issue. When the lights stop flashing, the issue is resolved. NOTE: Either one or both of the cartridges could be causing the problem. Step one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the problem cartridge The print cartridge may not have full electrical contact with the printer. Removing and reinstalling the cartridge may help. NOTE: HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges.
  1. Make sure the printer is on. Press the Power button if it is not lit.
  2. Open the printer cover, and then wait until the print cartridge carriage is idle and silent.
  3. Press down lightly on the end of the problem cartridge to release it. Figure 1: Removing the tri-color cartridge c00838141.gif
  4. Slide the cartridge out and inspect it. CAUTION: Do not touch the copper electrical contacts or the ink nozzles. Figure 2: Electrical contacts and nozzles c00838142.gif 1 - Copper electrical contacts 2 - Nozzles
    • Check the electrical contacts for debris.
    • Make sure all the clear nozzle protective tape has been removed. CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the copper electrical strip. Figure 3: Removing the clear nozzle protective tape c00838143.gif 1 - Protective tape
    • Look at the number on the print cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with your printer. Compatible print cartridges are listed in the Printer Reference Guide supplied with your printer.
  5. If the cartridge is compatible, reinstall it in the printer:
    • Color cartridges go into the left carriage slot.
    • Black cartridges go into the right carriage slot. Figure 4: Sliding cartridge into place c00838144.gif
Step two: Clean the problem cartridge contacts If the steps above did not solved the problem, follow the steps below to clean the electrical contacts on the print cartridge and in the carriage in the printer.
  1. Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and print carriage:
    • Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water may contain contaminants which could damage the cartridge.
    • Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
    • Sheets of paper or paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
  2. Open the printer lid and wait until the print cartridge carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. NOTE: If you are removing a print cartridge, try to clean the contacts quickly enough that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long.
  4. Unplug the printer.
  5. Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
  6. Clean the print cartridge contacts. The illustration below shows the contacts. Do not touch the nozzles. Figure 5: Electrical contacts c00838145.gif
  7. Clean the contacts in the print carriage, inside the printer. The illustration below shows the carriage and the contacts.
  8. Either let the cartridge sit for several minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
  9. Reinstall the cartridge, plug the printer back in, and close the printer cover. Figure 6: Print carriage contacts c00838146.gif
Step three: Repeat reseating and cleaning steps If the problem is not solved, repeat the reseating and cleaning procedures above.

SOURCE: Print Cartridge is Incompatible

Pleas be certain to remove the clear tape from the cartridge before inserting. Check the contact areas in the printer to ensure there is no tape residue or other material in this area. Go to the HP website and follow the troubleshooting instructions for this problem.

SOURCE: The printer doesn't recognize the new original HP color cartridge

There is a small spring that holds the ink cartridge in the ink holder. You will see it stick out from the right hand side of the ink holder where the ink cartridge slides in. If that spring isn't being held to the ink holder by two plastic tabs, (I.E. the plastic tabs are broken) the printer will never recognize the cartridge. If the printer is still under warranty I would contact HP or an authorized repair center for HP. Both the black and color ink holder has this spring. I know of no way to repair this kind of breakage.

SOURCE: HP PSC 1500 xi Cartridge Error Problem

You do need both cartridges installed in order to use the printer. Even if one is near empty it will print (although your quality may suffer).

I had the same problem. I called hp and spent an hour running through the troubleshooting things that I'd already done. They ended up sending me a new ink cartridge, and surprisingly, it worked. For some reason, the printer refused to recognize a nearly full ink cartridge. Go figure. It seems to be working for now, but it's a huge waste of ink and money. If you have the patience for it, call hp and see if they will replace your cartridges.

My hp officejet j4580 says incompatible black ink cartridge

I've been in print cartridge hell since I bought a J4580.

I spent an hour on chat with HP customer service and was able to resolve the problem by partially resetting the printer. Here's how:
  • Make sure your print cartridges are installed.
  • Unplug the machine, wait 20 seconds
  • Press and hold the # and 3 keys
  • Plug the machine back in
  • You'll see a reset message on the machine, release the # and 3 keys
  • Follow the prompts to set the language and location
Cross your fingers, hopefully your printer will print now!
