Toro Z4200 Kohler engine. I was mowing and shut the mower down. When I tried to restart it would not start, not even a single fire. Starter works fine.

Checked both fuses, OK. Starter just spins engine with no firing.

I had the same problem with my Toro z4200. So far I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, removed and cleaned carb, replaced carb solenoid, and squirted 5 cc gas in the cylinder. Starter turns at normal speed but engine will not crank. Replaced plug, pulled plug from cylinder and getting blue spark. Replaced fuses. Still will not crank. Cleaned battery terminals , all electrical contacts. Will not crank. Checked SP switches in steering levers and seat with ohmeter, they seem to be opening when button is depressed. Pulled flywheel cover to check pin. It is not sheared or even slightly displaced. Have ordered new diode and really switch. If these don't get it to crank, I am stumped.

Blades are probably still engaged or the arms aren't parked or you're not in the seat

Sometimes, the main jet to these small-engine carburetors gets clogged up. It is easy to get to. It is the brass bolt that holds the float bowl onto the carburetor body. If you remove it, gas will readily flow out, so drain the fuel by removing the fuel line and placing it into a suitable container first. Remove the bolt and exterior washer (don't lose that). Clean the bottom hole in the bolt and pay close attention to the very small holes in the smooth section near the top. Use NO metal objects to clean the orifices as they are a precision size and can't be enlarged or scraped up. Clean the float bowl also while it is off, make sure the bolt is clean and shiny and reinstall. This will assure the carb is getting fuel, providing there is no clog between the fuel tank and the carb body in the fuel line. You should pull it and blow it out, making sure it is clear also. I recommend installing an inline fuel filter on ALL 4 stroke machinery.

One suggestion wouild be to check the spark right after failure. You can buy in-line spark indicators that give you a visual light if you are getting spark. This way you could see if you are losing spark when the engine warms up. If your spark is good, you would want to check the compression after the engine is warmed up and quits. You should have at least 100# minimum.

SOURCE: i have a 19 hp kohler courage on my toro zero turn

This sounds like the carb is plugged. Sometimes fuel thickens and makes globs...

If you verified the fuel flow to the inlet of the carb, then you need to take the carb off and open it up....
So, what needs to happen is you blow out all of the passageways with carb cleaner.

Any adjustable jets: make note of the position it is in, and FINGER TIGHT turn it clockwise until it closes (typically 1 to 1 1/2 turns) SOOOOO, you can set this jet back to the same positon....when finished blowing everything out, bottom the jet and back out the number of turns out, noted for that jet.

Open the float chamber, and clean as necessary, Inspect the float adjustment: invert the carb, and observe the angle of the float, relative to the carb body.... Usually almost parallel, but not necessarily.
Inspect the inlet valve, and clean those areas...

I usually use all new gaskets and valves, but if you are not a carb person, cleaning is effective and I think old gaskets may be okay, if not torn or damaged.

I have a toro riding mower with a 21 horse power kohler motor that wont start even with ether. I tested the plug and I am getting spark. I am getting fuel to the carburetor as well.

for it to run you need fire fuel and compression. you say you have fire. if you spray starting fluid in the carburetor then you should have fuel. pull the plug out and check the compression. sounds like a valve or valve seat is to blame.

Toro self propelled 22 inch recycler lawn mower start pull cord is "stuck"

Casey,

My son just bought a new Toro self propelled 22" recycler and has had problems on two different occasions. The mower just bogs down to a stop and when he tried to pull the starter cord, it was very VERY difficult to pull. At first I thought the engine had seized up for some reason (no oil?), but we found the problem.

First, disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug (to avoid the engine starting); tip the mower on its side and check very carefully the pulley and transmission belt. In his case, a piece of wood had gotten stuck between the belt and the pulley. Removing it fixed the problem (now he mows a little higher so as not to get so close to any debris). (We did have one further problem after that - the engine would not start - not even fire. After pulling and pulling, checking for gas, and checking that the air filter was cleean, we decided to check if the cylinder was flooded - we removed the spark plug, wiped and dried if off, and replaced it. It started right away.)

This belt 'n pulley arrangement isn't the best idea, if you ask me.

Good luck.

Toro TimeCutter z4200 will not start

First check to see if there is a fuel shutoff under the tank. On some models there is a fuel filter screen inside the tank where the fuel line connects to the tank. If niether of these work, R&R the carb.

Dual blade mower leaves uncut strips between blades.

Had same uneven mowing problem with new Toro Z4200 XTR mower. Problem was one side of the U-shaped rear deck hanger rod had popped out of its chassis mount (did hit something with mowing deck). Removed hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Put end of U-shaped rear deck hanger rod back in the chassis mount and remounted hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Z4200 now cuts lawn evenly again.
