if you have a windows xp cd , then have the computer boot from the xp cd and it should setup and partition the drive for you. it it doesnt find the harddrive at all then download the sata driver and unpack it to a usb pen drive.when xp starts up from the cd then hit f2 to load drivers . it should pickup the sata drive after it had the driver but i would try a normal setup by booting from the cd

or order a set of recovery cds from hp for $15.85

Sir, try to check the cable or the connection between the hard drive and your laptop. it must be loose and see also the cmos set up if its really detected by your laptop.

HI,
There could be 3 possiblities here.
1. The HDD you have installed is incompatible. This system would not support a harddrive more than 120 GB.

2. Second, there could be a motherboard problem

3. The new harddrive may require additional drivers to be installed , check if you have got any installation cd with your new harddrive .

I would update , more infor on the same in a moment

Thanks

    Troubleshooting steps

Before Windows opens and while the “Press to enter setup” prompt is displayed in the lowerleft

corner of the screen, press f10.

Go to the diagnostic menu option and run the test on your hardrive .If the hardrive fails , it would give you an error of why its failing , if it passes , then you need to install drivers for it to get to work with windows xp. The problem is quite common on big harddrives , from segate , wester digital and hitachi. You may need to call the hardrive manufatcurer.

IF you could give us the model number of the hDD and the capictiy of the haddrive you are trying to install

    Thanks

Is the new drive SATA? if it is then there is no way you can install XP without having the sata drivers on a floppy disk to help you recognise the hard drive, the only operating system which will install is Vista, this because there are hardly any sata drivers on the XP install CD, it works fine until you get to the part where it says no hard drive detected.
Had this problem loads of times with Intel based laptops

kind regards

If the new hard driver that you put is a new one and not tested to be working , this can be a problem with that new hard drive and you may want to use a different hard drive since that one is not being detected...

Just check whether hard drive is properly placed in your laptop .

If it is not installed properly you cant recognize the hard drive.

You will need to get a recovery cd from your manufacturer. with this you can boot the computer from the cd and procede to format and install windows on the new drive. they usually will charge $20 or so for recovery cds.

when you get the cd, put it in the drive and boot the computer. it should load from the cd. if it doesn't, you need to enter the bios to change the boot order. usually you hit a button at startup (del, spacebar, etc) to enter bios, the info is usually displayed on screen.

Hard Disk Failure #1-03 Repair? This code shows up after a hard disk self test.

If the notebook is under warranty IMMEADIATELY contact HP. Get a free hard drive from them.
If not then unfortunately you need to buy a new hard drive.
Note: Buy a HP Hard drive because other third party hard drive may not work.

Not recognizing hard disc drive for windows xp reinstall .

You aren't using the correct install disk . The generic XP install disk can't recognize a SATA disk. You will have to load the appropriate driver during install. Here it is ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32001-32500/sp32492.exe
Or you could create a custom install disk  as explained here

Cannot get Toshiba P@% S507 to see new hard drive.

you can't use a restore disk made for a specific hard drive with a much larger hard drive. This information is checked by the restore cd. You would need to contact toshiba and get a regular windows install cd.

Cant install recovery disks after a hard drive reformat!

the recovery disk is designed to repair or restore a system to its previous factory condition and is not a full installation. the formating of your hdd would have erased all the data required for this process to be completed. you can try a recovery utility that may be able to help you at this link. the disk might not have been saved in an .iso format to tell the computer to run it before starting an OS. if this disk is recognized and runs on your system then you will need to attempt a recovery, which is unlikely since the drive has allready been formated many necessary system files may not be able to be restored. at this point a complete new install will be necessary.
Good Luck!

NTLDR Error

You need to either reinstall windows, or take the drive out and plug it into another computer.  You can google NTDLR and download the file from whatever OS you are using and put that in your root directory on your laptop hard drive.  Reconnect and you should be good to go.

No Hard Disc found after crash

Compaq uses F10 at boot to initiate the recovery program resident on the hard drive partition normally called "Recovery". If you cannot initiate the hard drive at boot then press F1 to get to setup and see if the hard drive is recognized there. If it is not then you will have to troubleshoot the hard drive.
If you have another laptop to try the hard drive out or a laptop to IDE hard drive adapter  (cheap) to connect to a desktop computer as a slave drive you will either verify that the hard drive is bad or it is good and a boot sector problem is at hand. Also if you can get the drive recognized as a slave drive you can either rescue data or format the drive.
These are preliminary steps so post again when you have more information. Steve Medley

Hard drive problem

I've been wrestling with tw IBM's with similar issues for the last three days, one of which wouldn't recognize the hard drive or the CD drive. I'm going to suggest flashing the bios, this worked on the ones I have. Here's a link to the bios download. I recommend that you use the one for creating a diskette. Try this and let me know.

Install a roxio cd into my laptop

You need a replacement CD drive most likely.

The 5300 can be swapped for almost any generic laptop optical drive. I would pick one up from directron.com or geeks.com they have new drives cheap.

Then just unscrew the plastic mounting rails attached to the side and back of the drive, swap them over to the new drive and go!
