Question about Ovens

1 Answer

We have about a 14-15 year old Maytag electric stove & oven. I coulnd't find one that looked like it anywheres. It has two knobs on either side of the clock and timer. Can't find a model number on it, just a lot of part numbers that start with 8114P. When my wife went to turn on the oven tonight it popped the circuit breaker. Now it had done it a week ago but she's used it since so we didn't think anything about it. I unplugged it and the circuit will stay on but as soon as you plug the oven in, it sparks at the box on the floor where you plug it in. I can't find any place to take it apart to check it. I checked the back of the stove where the wires hook up and everything is fine. I cleaned out the oven just in case that was doing it. I told her it was a mess underneath the burners and took them all out but it still tripped it. It did it once a week or so ago and now all the time. Have you any ideas what could be wrong? We are both on social security disability and don't have amuch money for a repairman, let alone a new stove. Thanks Bill Krohn

I am thinking the plug in where you plug the stove into is defective. Turn the breaker off and take the cover off the plug in. Let me know what you find.

Turns out, the bottom element in the stove was broken. I replaced that and things worked fine for a few more years. It's been so long now I don't remember what solved the problem. A new stove this year has certainly helped.

I couldn't get the cover off. Its wedged right between the baseboard and the floor. There are no screws to take if off that I could see. They came into the wall from the attic with it so its not like I can go in the basement and check anything. I'll try to get into it tomorrow. Thanks a million for your help.

How Do I Calibrate An Old Maytag Oven

If the knob is consistently 25 degrees off from the indicated temperature the simplest and cheapest fix is to make a new indicator mark on the stove 25 degrees from the original.or some knobs have a glued on ring with the temperature numbers on them . Removing the ring and regluing it at the correct position could also work. Hope this helps.

My oven wont turn off from the knob it keeps turning

You didn't say whether you have a gas or electric oven, or oven & stove. I'll assume you have a stove, just to cover all bases.

First, you should shut down the oven: a gas stove will have a valve on the gas line behind the stove. The valve will either have a red handle or a flat stem that usually has a hole in it. Turn either valve 1/4 turn to shut off gas, use a wrench on the flat stem. An electric stove should be shut off by flipping off the double circuit breaker for it in your electric panel. Do not unplug an electric stove when it is on; this can damage the plug &/or electrocute you.

Most likely the inside of the knob has stripped out. Look at the knob for a hole that has a setscrew in it: a small allen wrench or screwdriver will loosen the setscrew, most knobs don't have them and will pull off. Be careful to use even pressure on two sides of the knob; if you can't pull it off, use two butter knives or flat screw drivers to pry it up enough to get a grip on it.

Look at the center stem on the back of the knob, it will likely be cracked or stripped. Some stems have a D-shaped metal insert that strips out inside the plastic stem. If you have one, pull off a burner knob and compare the stems in the back, if they are the same size, put the burner knob on the shaft for the oven control, and use that knob to turn the oven control off.

If the burner knob won't fit, use your fingers or a pair of pliers (gently) to turn off the oven control shaft. If the shaft stops normally, you can turn the stove back on using either the gas valve or the circuit breaker. If you have a gas stove that doesn't have electric ignition (a clicking noise when you turn on a burner) you may need to re-light the pilots for the burners. Lift the covers off the burners to re-light the pilots.

If you have succeeded in turning off the oven, you need a new knob -- you can get one at an appliance parts store or maybe a hardware store. If the oven control did not turn off normally, I would leave the oven/stove turned off: the control itself will need to be replaced by a qualified repair person.

I have a Simpson electric oven with stove top elements, and one of the burners will only cook at the highest level, I cant figure out how to change it, any suggestions?

You need to change the "Simmerstat", take the model number to your local electrical parts supplier/parts counter at your local stove retail shop that sells Simpson stoves and ask for one for that model, make sure you get the right one for the position as some control a single element and some control dual elements.

*** TURN OFF THE WALL SWITCH AND ENSURE NO POWER IS APPLIED TO THE STOVE BEFORE PROCEEDING ****
Remove the upper back panel of the stove. Swap wire for wire of the old simmerstat to the new one, remove the knob from the old Simmerstat, undo the nut securing the simmerstat in the oven control panel and discard, fit new one, secure, fit knob, fit back panel, turn on wall switch and test.

Some countrys/states require registered electricians perform this task on electrical appliances so you must ensure you can do this legally before you start and take the relevant safety precautions and don't electrocute yourself.

Maytag gemini oven tough controls won't work --

Check the door switch and the temperature probe. If they are ok, then the problem is likely in the control board. These boards can be rebuilt.

I cannot find the model number for my maytag oven to download a manual. I've lived in my home for three years, the oven was there when I got there so I don't know much about it. Now the display is saying...

Unfortunately, there is no standardized location for the model # sticker. Look in all for side corners of the oven door, then look on all four sides of the oven opening.  Look on the inside of the oven for the name plate.  Look under the stove top where the burners are and finally look behind the oven.
As a last resort you can look on your sales contract to see if you can contact the previous owner for advice.
