Blank (dark) notebook screen after hooking up digital ext monitor
HELP notebook screen went blank after installing a Samsung 245bw (dual display - XP) on a Sony VGN-A790, 17”, 1920x1200, ATI 600x (256MB) graphics card. Samsung 245bw (bad mistake) was replacing ViewSonic 21' (1600x1200) as dual monitor after the ViewSonic primary screen went out after 2 years.

The backlight have went out on your screen. I had this happen on an old laptop I was messing with. Check the link below for some tips.
If you shine a light on the screen, can you somewhat see the screen?
Does the laptop power up properly? (can you hear it running?)
Hook up an external monitor to your laptop, does the external display properly?
If you get the boot image on your screen then you screen is working correctly unless there's something that you not explaining. You can try an ext. monitor if you think it is something related to your LCD screen not woring during boot up. If the ext monitor not showing your laptop to boot then you have problem with your OS and may need to get it repaired or restored.
When you start your computer, keep hitting the F8 key. you will get a menu that comes up.. Choose the VGA mode.. this will stop the computer from loading video drivers and will allow you to install the new monitor.
Give that a try.. Hope it helps... let me know
Hi, if it works with an external monitor it's more likely an LCD problem. When you push the power button, noting comes up on the main LCD screen? not even the Acer logo etc.?
Did you set your video card to use an external monitor and disabled the primary LCD? If so, you need to go to display settings, advanced and go to ATI Display and make sure that the notebook monitor is on.
hook it up to another monitor then control panel then display see i8f something was changed in there
otherwise your screen may have gone but it's only two years old
what were you doing when you lost your screen
Firstly, the LCD+external setting will switch one or the other or both on.
Secondly, if you go into your display properties (or even the advanced page where your video card additional features are) you can usually select which monitor is "primary".
I suspect that your external display is primary, and the LCD screen is not "enabled" or used as part of the desktop.
The settings are all there, it's just a matter of finding them (depending on what video card is in whatever laptop you have)
This might have happened in the first place if you accidentally hit "Fn" and one of the "F" keys up the top. Fn + F6 on my laptop will switch LCD/external monitors on and off. (for example) There is usually a little blue picture on one of the "F" keys to denote that function.
