Question about Gateway FPD2185W 21 in. LCD Television

Help me please - Gateway FPD2185W

My screen will not display and the power button wont allow me to turn it off. When I unplug and plug it back up, all it does it show a bright blue then dims out. I've taken it apart to see if the capacitors are bulging or leaking or anything but I don't see what others have described as far as my capacitors go. Maybe that is due to be inexperienced when it comes to these things but I can learn right? :) I've taken some photos of them and the links are below. Can someone view them and tell me if you spot anything abnormal? I don't have the money to send it in for repair so I'm doing a self-repair.

Hopefully these pics will help.

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear enough. I'm not experiencing a blue screen. My power button is blue and when I unplug and plug the monitor back up, the button goes bright then dims out.

I have the exact same problem with the same monitor, i was wondering what has happened so far and if I should bother bringing it to a repair shop?? Gateway was no help at all!!

I tried all the steps except to take it to a technician, I am wondering if tainted did??

    Did you resolve your problem?
Need to know, I have the exact same problem??

  • taintedpearl Dec 21, 2008

Hey. No I didn't bother getting it fixed because I didn't know how to
solder and couldn't afford to get it repaired. A friend of mine gave
me another screen so I'm just tucking this one away.

I also have the same problem. A black screen and the power button constantly blue. I can't turn the power off and even if I turn the computer off the power button stays on in blue.

I'm experiencing the same problem. The blue light comes on and goes dim with no activity on the screen. I've changed to another computer, no response. I've tried connecting another monitor to the laptop and everything works fine. The monitor was given to me and it worked the very first time I connected it and booted up. After I shut down and come back later, it never came back on. Any suggestions? My laptop added the new hardware intially.

Ok, I have some news on this that I know you will not like, but the whole point of this site is to try and help you fix the problem, or at least, try and point you in the right direction.

The news:
I have done some extensive searching on this problem over the last month, as I have also had a friend with a similar problem that you are describing. There is a manufacturer's fault on the main power board, this has been recognised by Gateway, but as it happens inconsistantly (it may happen after a few months or a few years), they are not prepared to recall the product.

Obviously this doesn't help us as consumers that buy their products. The blue screen that you describe happens with alot of visual hardware inc. graphics cards that affects the whole market, and has now become affectionately known as The Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD).

If you are one of the lucky one's, and it is still under the manufacturer's warranty, get it sent back asap, and ask for a replacement to a similar model. If not, the only thing you can do is get it repaired or get a new/2nd-hand one.

Like I said, I'm sorry this isn't the news you wanted, but I didn't think it was fair for you to hang on.

    Hi again,

I'm sorry I mis-read your post. Though, if I'm correct in now assuming that you, 1 - the screen technically doesn't turn on, you see nothing, and 2 - the power button lights up when pressed, but then fades, then this is still a power fault, but not the one I was describing before.

Ok, this could be a couple of things:

1 - Your monitor is stuck in sleep-mode

2 - The monitor isn't getting enough power (or it may be getting too much power)

3 - The screen has blown

    4 - Power board failure

5 - It's not recieving a signal and therefore powering down

    Some solutions:

1 can be checked by either connecting it to a different computer or connecting another monitor to the computer.

2 - can be checked by using another power cable/adapter

3 - can only be checked by an engineer

4 - can only be checked by an engineer

5 - can be checked by using another signal cable (VGA, S-Video, DV-I)

Whatever you try, I strongly reccomend not to fix or touch the internal of the monitor. The capacitors in a monitor hold large amounts of electricity, enough to really, really hurt someone (being polite here), even when the monitor isn't plugged in. So please be careful.

Anyway, I really do hope it's something simple.

My screen turns black upon startup. For awhile when my screen was on, it would flicker on and off but remain on. Now, the only time I can see the screen is when I unplug vga cable then plug back in but...

You mention a VGA cable so I assume its a stand alone monitor for a desktop PC.

It can be repaired, this fault is usually indicative of a capacitor, maybe two or three bursting in the

a) Power supply.
b) Back Lighter.
C) Inverter.

As its 6 years old, I would suggest replacing would be the most cost effective resolution.

Screen wmorking fine one minute then went out. Tried rebooting. Blue power light stays on and wont turn off unless I unplug. No screen whatsoever. Help!

the power supply is starting to fail, you are using workarounds to keep it working, but this is causing more harm the longer you wait to get it repaired.which at some point may become unrepairable then. email may be able to explain how to repair it before it is to late.

The problem was repaired by, Calling gateway. You pull up the challange code #'s on the monitor. You tell gateway agent the code numbers, they tell you a unlock code. You enter that on your monitor. and thats that! You pull up the challange code by unpluging your monitor then hold the menu button on monitor. plug back in holding the menu button! larrygl.

Screen only stays on for 1 sec

Assuming you changed all the caps and did it correctly.
IF you get flickering, It could be a transistor on the inverter board.
OR !!! and probably more likely,
It could be one of the bulbs in the lcd itself is failing. It only takes one bad bulb to stop an inverter from firing up !! You can check them one at a time if you have another working monitor.
If you do unplug a good bulb from the good monitor and try each of the questionable ones, one at a time.
Doesn't have to be a gateway monitor to test it, just needs the same backlight plug.
