Question about Panasonic PT-53WX42 53" Rear Projection Television
I've had my Panasonic PT-53WX42F for 5 years now and first noticed the problem about 2 years ago. The problem has gotten steadily worse and is now at a point where I can't stand it. The green on the left and right sides of the screen are "askew".
The green on this set can be adjusted vertically and horizontally by aligning green lines with marks on the top, left, bottom, and right sides of the screen frame. The problem is that this green "+" sign seems to be "rotated" slightly counter clock wise so that it is impossible to align correctly. The end of the green horizontal line is below the mark on the left edge of the screen frame and above the mark on the right side. The vertical line is left of the mark on the top of the screen and right of the mark on the bottom.
The 2 repair techs I spoke with on the phone told me that the convergence IC's probably need to be replaced and that it will cost me $400 to $500+. I just want to absolutely sure before I attempt to fix the problem myself. The problem didn't just appear suddenly. This seems to to me like something just got out of alignment in there, possibly due to the vibration of my sound system.
Another thing I'm wondering about is how to clean the inside of the screen. A couple spiders got trapped in there somehow and I can see what looks like bits of stuff hanging from their webs.
Does not sound like the chips are bad.
What you need to adjust is "SKEW". You need to enter "service Mode" then go into "Coarse Convergence". Skew can be adjusted for all 3 colors. Unless you have the service manual, these corrections should not be attempted.
To clean the INSIDE of the screen, you really have to disassemble the TV. Remove all the screws that hold the "back" ( the piece with the mirror) to the front (screen) assembly.
The screen can be cleaned with a solution of diluted isopropyl alcohol, no more than a 50% solution. Drugstores will carry it, but it might be 70%-90%. Just dilute with distilled water (not tap water as it contains minerals). Personally I have used 70% with no ill side effects but 50% is recommended.
