This is not a solution to that problem, but the dripping water is just condensation from the cold water in the tank. Like a coke can on a warm day. It goes away after everything warms up. It is more than likely a gas valve, but I have fooled mine into working by not turning the valve all the way up to the full on position.

Paint fumes can foul a thermocouple. If you have painted anywhere in the home this could be the issue otherwise its the gas valve.

Why wont the pilot light on my hot water tank stay lit

there is no pilot- it is lit with a ignitor. If you have problems the unit needs a service cleaning of the flame sensor rods.

Pilot light will not stay lit.

More than likely the thermal couple is defective. The thermal couple is a safety device that shuts the gas off if the pilot goes out. If it is defective the pilot light will not stay lit. The thermal couple is the device that the small copper line goes to. It is mounted beside the pilot flame and the flame much touch the TC for it to work. If the flame is not touching the TC bend it until it is in the flame. If it is touching the TC then replace it.

check and or replace the thermal coupling. the coupling goes into the main gas control, if the coupling is bad it will shut off gas supply. as a safety measure.

If the water heater shuts off again unplug the white the sensor plug underneath the thermostat (The black plastic box). Then plug it back in. This sensor plug has a black and white wire going to it and it's possible the plug could have been loose going into the thermostat..

Pilot will not relight properly on 40 gallon natural gas hot water heater

Hi,
The thermocouple needs to be replaced. That is what keeps the pilot light lit. The thermocouple is the little metal probe that sticks up into the pilot flame. Very easy to replace.

Cannot get the pilot light to stay lit

This can be two common things:

1. Carbon buildup at the pilot orifice (where the gas comes out). This can be cleaned with carburetor cleaner, but make sure the gas is off first (important!).

2. The thermocouple is either bad, displaced or it too is carboned up like the pilot assembly described above.

If you clean everything and the pilot still keeps going out, replace the thermocouple. Make sure the thermocouple is squarely in the flam path.

sounds like you need to replace the thermal coupling. This component sends a signal to the gas valve that there is a pilot

On my water heater when I try to relight the pilot it will light but the pilot goes out before I can turn the tank on

The thermocoupler is faulty. Make sure the bulb is sitting st the tip of the pilot flam so it gets real hot. then if that doesn't do it, it has to be replaced
