More than likely it is the clutch. I would think if the tub is very loaded it just barely will get started spinning. However when the tub is empty to spins like crazy. If this is the case then it is the clutch.

there could be a problem with your belt being to loose. how ever i think the main problemis the motor is not turning or gearing up into the high side of the spin cycle.other problem may be the transmssion but i would check the motor first

My machine is spinning, but clothes are still very wet, have to drain and spin at least twice to get them dry enough to put in the dryer

If the washer doesn't reach its proper spin speed, the clothes may be too wet at the end of a cycle. Check to be sure the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again. If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt (Maytag®), a worn clutch (GE®/Hotpoint®), or a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component.

Wet clothes

the reason the clothes are wet is the washer is not shifting to high spin, does the washer have a speed switch(normal wash spin, high wash spin)if its not the speed switch than the clutch is bad,how old is the washer?mike

But is the washer empty, if there is still some water in it, there could be something in the drain line,
if all the water is gone, then it sounds like the washer is not reaching the full speed of the spin cycle.

Unless someone can remove the drain line and check the pump, and check the clutch of the machine,
I am sorry to say you should call an appliance person and have them make a service call.

If you where to post the model # of the washer, someone could look at the manual of it and see
how the washer works and what the pump is. I hope it is a simple fix for you.
