Question about Dell (313-1220) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive

1 Answer

I have a Dell desktop computer in my home office that is about 2-3 years old. It has a CD/DVD drive that is suddenly not working. The disc drive has disappeared from the options on "My Computer" and isn't being at all recognized by the computer. It's as though it doesn't exist. Is there a fix for this without having to ship the computer off somewhere or take it in? I have a tech friend who said it is a common problem for this Dell model.

Hi

Yes it is a common problem with Dell machines. Try right clicking on the icon in My Computer and selecting 'eject' If that does not work then just buy a new one and install. It is a straightforward job. just make sure the jumper connections on the new player are set the same as the old one

    Drive won't recognize discs

the blank media must be compatible with the burner drive that you're using... meaning if the drive is for CD-R you can only use CD-R blanks not CD+R. if the drive is CD-/+R then you can use either CD-R or CD+R

Dell Cd/Dvd burner not working properly

I have a Dell XPS 400 that's about 3 years old. I have a DVD reader and a DVD-RW device. The former works - the latter takes forever to read discs (particularly DVD data discs.)

I'm starting to think some of the generic DVD-RW devices Dell uses in its computers are prone to early failure. The DVD-RW in my XPS-400 was called "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N".

I'm going to try cleaning it, and then just swap it out for a better device.

first try a audio CD see if ti reads that fine. then inset a data CD and see if you can see all the files on it. Try a few data and audio CD's. If it has trouble with any of these your drive has gone to the great garbage dump in the sky.
