I am having the same problem with a new Tappan TMV151F and can't get anyone to come and fix it. The Lowe's store won't take it back.

My TMV151F Tappan has an error -SE- and will not run, I have tried unplgging it and plugging back in to try and reset it, but no luck. Has anyone else had this problem or knows what this -SE- code means.

The magnetron is overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

This is usually caused when the internal cooling fan is not running or by a magnetron that is failing.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be
destroyed.

It may also be a clogged exhaust duct or filter. Grease filters should be cleaned regularly and charcoal filters should be replaced (not cleaned) every 6-12 months.

You can refer to your owner;s manual for that info.

You can download most Maytag / Whirlpool / Tappan owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

I had the message -SE- showing up on my TMV151F. I opened up the control panel and made sure all the connectors were secure. I noticed the red connector was not in all the way. I also noticed that the grounding wire behind the mini-manual was touching the back part of the board so I separated it. Not sure if either of these actions fixed it or if by some miracle it fixed itself. It is working fine now.

How do I get rid of the noise?

Hello, Sarkis -

I found 4 descriptions of what may be causing the noise when you operate your microwave oven. See the information on all 4 possible causes here:
https://www.repairclinic.com/RepairHelp/How-To-Fix-A-Microwave/78-88--/Tappan-Microwave-is-loud-or-noisy

Note: Safety advice I have read regarding microwave oven repair is to have a microwave oven repaired only by an authorized repair technician. It is not do-it-yourself work.

Any repair might not be worth the cost compared to purchasing a new replacement. A microwave repair technician authorized to work on Tappan microwave ovens will be able to evaluate what is causing the loud noise and give you an estimate of the repair costs.

Note: If you find you need to replace your microwave oven, please be sure the old microwave oven is sent to electronics recycling.

Best wishes.

Need help, trying to repair my Tappan Model TMV151F microwave.

That really sounds strange... It may be a door switch or a relay on the controller. (Internal contacts, not solder joints).

The service manual is here.

Did you take apart the bottom door switch to check it? Blurry but useful video here.

Under the circumstances, I would be most concerned with the bottom switch, but it wouldn't hurt to check the top one. It will not be the middle switch.

Makes a really loud buzzing noise during operation

Unit uses a Magnetron and likely a power board called an inverter to run it. Someone would have to open the unit in a way where they might pinpoint where the sound is coming from and then take action--does not of course sound normal or good to me.

I put pizza wrapped in aluminum foil into the microwave for 3-5 seconds until i saw sparks.. i took it out and it left black marks on the microwave. How do i get it off? Does the microwave still work?

If you shut it down quick enough the microwave will be operational, to remove the black marks mix baking soda in water and until becomes a paste, apply over affected area's let it sit for 5 minutes and wipe off with clean warm water.

Tappan TMV151FS over range microwave starts to work and then dies

Never run the microwave without a load (something to heat)!!! That kills the microwave generating parts.

Sounds like a 'thermal' protect switch is activating after running. Make sure that (if the unit is mounted in a cabinet) that there is sufficient space around the unit for proper air flow and that nothing is blocking the vents. Try setting it on a counter top and heat something. If it works properly and doesn't shut off, the venting space is the problem. You may have to have the cabinet that it sits in redesigned for more clearance.

Tappan microwave keeps running

Usually only the fan will continue to run, as the microwave power supplies has redundant circuits to prevent its operation should the door be open. Usually a fan running when the door is open is due to either a worn out door switch, or a misaligned door switch, which if you fix it for them is an hour of screwing around including ordering the switch, plus $15 for the switch itself. However, there can be other parts like relays which could have failed... and at 25 years old, its really questionable how long the power supply or magnetron is going to keep on running. Alas if you have some skill and don't mind spending $20, maybe you can fix it and then can get another few years of use out of it,

If you call in an appliance guy, the service call alone is likely to approach the cost of a low end under cabinet microwave. Granted, if there are wooden trim pieces and such, a low end microwave may require some custom wooden brackets which can get pretty spendy too.

Total power loss during use

Check the voltage on the outlet, make sure it is 115v -- 122volts max, any less will cause it shut off, make sure the polarity off the outlet is correct and it is grounded, check all of your wiring connections, if all this is ok replace unit with a different unit or different supplier of unit
