Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook

"electrical terminal" loose on motherboard

Hello all. my 4 year old Dell Latitude D600 has a loose electrical terminal... or at least that's what I'm calling it. I'm referring to a piece, connected to the mb, that the external power cable connects to. It is loose now and has quickly degerated to the point where the laptop cannot be turned on. I've taken the machine apart and can only see the side of the mb that the terminal is actually on - I'm not able to see the side that presumably has the soldering. Is there a fix? It seems very unfortunate to have to dump an otherwise perfectly funtional comp because of a loose terminal. Any ideas?

can you please elaborate on: "If this is the case then soldering fly leads onto the motherboard terminals and taking them out to a jack plug salvages the laptop."

i'm not sure this is the case, but i've soldered the terminal a bit and still having the same problems... the terminal is still shaky too. so i have to re-solder i guess...

I have seen several of this fault. It is due to badly soldered joints resulting in a 'dry' joint that eventually allows the power supply socket contacts to pull out of the motherboard. Generally the joints can be remade without any further damage/problem. Sometimes the socket has been so badly wiggled about that it breaks out of the motherboard. If this is the case then soldering fly leads onto the motherboard terminals and taking them out to a jack plug salvages the laptop.

If you have the top off the laptop then you still need to remove the system board from the lower case. Dell support supply downloadable dismantling manuals for these at the following

FIND THE AGE OF LAPTOP

The D600 line was introduced in 2004. The only accurate way to find the exact age of your laptop, or the PRODUCTION DATE is to contact Dell. Otherwise you would only be able to find out the general date which was the 2004-2005 years. After that they moved on to the D6X0 lines...D630, etc as the processors improved. Some more info on your unit
Latitude D600
The D600 (and simultaneously-introduced D800) was Dell's first business-oriented notebook based on the Pentium-M processor; it used the first-generation "Banias" Pentium M chips running on a 400 MT/s FSB on DDR memory. It had a PATA hard drive and a D-series modular bay, and used an ATI GPU Radeon 9000. It had a 14" screen, in regular (non-widescreen) form factor. Unlike later D6x0 series machines, both memory sockets were accessible from a single cover on the bottom of the system.
Many Latitude models had a near-clone Inspiron, in the case of the D600, it was the Inspiron 600M. Differences include that the 600M does not work with the Dell D-Dock, and the case styling is slightly different. The motherboards, screens and hard drive caddies are all physically interchangeable

Probably. Look for a replacement battery on eBay. I have threee d600s and about a year ago I bought aftermarket batteries on eBay that work fine for about 1/3 the cost of a genuine Dell.

This is do to the jack were the power button board plugs into the motherboard, i see this alot on d600 and d610, the lights come on for about 3 sec then computer turns off..

this can be fixed by resoldering the plug to the motherboard but most will say you need a new mother board the leads are small and tight together..

My latitude d600 will not start.

Is the connection on the Laptop loose? Most power connectors are soldered onto the motherboard and are notorious for becoming loose. If the connector is loose you it may be shorting out the adapter. I would have a professional look at it before plugging the adapter back into it. If you are shorting out the adapter it could present a fire hazard. Most laptop repair companies will resolder the connector for around a $100.
