Question about HP Compaq Presario C304NR Notebook

Laptop won't turn on

My laptop was working fine a few days ago, but now when I turn it on all I see is the power light blinking and a low humming/crunching noise, but the screen stays black. Also, the laptop will only turn on at all when it is plugged in. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Sorry, I think I didn't explain properly. What I mean is that even when the laptop is plugged into the wall the only thing it does it blink the power light and make the weird noise. It won't turn on properly at all. All I get is a black screen.

Thanks for the answer anyway, I hope I'm clearer now.

I tried that, but I still get the same problem. Nothing has changed. Any more ideas?

I tried that, and after the memory was cleaned (there was one panel) the laptop hummed like a working laptop for a second but then the light flickered and it turned off. the screen was still black.

When I try to power up the power light comes on like normal, hard drive spins for a few seconds, then nothing. The power light blinks rapidly, but the hard drive stops and the screen stays black.

I have the same problem with the blinking light plus my LCD screen is black. Are these fixable problems or do I need a new computer.

    Thank you!

You say that the laptop only works well when its plugged into AC power?
Being a PC technician the first thing i would be looking at is the battery, faulty batteries cause problems with laptops on start up, I think you may need a replacement battery

Ok, there are many different reasons why the machine won't boot up, underneath the laptop you will find access panels to the memory, remove these and clean them, they look like this:
if there are 2 place them back 1 at a time and see if it boots

the memory may be faulty, to test this plug a external monitor into the laptop to see if you get a display

N500 will not charge

Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED lightup? If not then -The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty.Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Battery light is blinking red and will not charge

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya! If the battery light is blinking red, that indicates low power, there's a possibility that the problem is with the AC adapter, or the battery or maybe the DC port itself, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.

2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.

3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.

4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

Is the battery dead?

Have you tried taking the battery out and running strictly on the AC cord? If so, and it still has a problem, then it's not just the battery.

My system is not working, when I press the power button, power is not coming

You are having the same charging issue that many other owners of this laptop are having. The power module where you plug in the AC adapter to the computer is defective. This is a known issue that Best Buy usually can't figure out. I sent mine back to Best Buy 4 times under warranty and they were unable to fix it.

If it's still under warranty tell them to replace that power plug circuit board or whatever it is and it will work fine. Mine has been working fine since Toshiba replaced that part 6 months ago.
