Question about Sylvania 6240VE VHS/S-VHS playback VCR
This vcr has a light sensor that is lite up and says that there is a tape inside the vcr. I know that there isn't a tape inside of the vcr. Does this vcr have a sensor that can sense when a tape is inside of the unit?

Most VCR's do have a sensor system inside. It consists of what looks like a bar that is standing up right in the middle of the area the tape sits down into, and sensors on one or both sides of the tape bay that detect this source. The source is usually an infrared diode, and it is most likely this diode that has malfunctioned. I would checjk to see if anything has gotten inside that might be blocking this sensor, if not then the diode probably needs replaced.
