File Allocation Tables (FAT) function much differently than a journalized file system like NTFS (aka HP Unix File System) or the Mac OS filing system (aka BSD Unix File System). While FAT filing systems are more compatible it performs poorly with larger disk spaces. Whenever a journalized file system is improperly mounted the system replays the journal the next time the partition is mounted; if a critical error is detected the system will begin a repair process. (No critical errors detected does not mean that there is not a problem with the file system.) After a repair process completes the system needs to be rebooted twice for the changes to take effect. With that being said, Mac OS could be detecting a problem with the file system when it plays back the journal which is keeping it from mounting. I'm assuming this is a hard drive in an external enclosure, plug the drive into the PC and run a file system check.

    • Open "My Computer"

    • Right-click on the portable drive

    • Select "Properties"

    • Left-click the "Tools" tab

    • Left-click "Check Now..."

    • Make sure you put a check in the box for "Automatically fix file system errors"

What format is the hard drive partition in? And what verion of Mac OS are you using? Is it formatted with NTFS?

Mac OS can not repair a non-native partition like NTFS and will not mount a drive with errors. Repair the drive on the native system and this should resolve the problem.

Useing Hard drive on a Mac computer(Hard drive Isn't showing up on computer)

It could be that it's either not partitioned properly, or if you've used it before it might not have been ejected properly the last time it was disconnected.

Some drives that say they are Mac compatible must be partitioned for Mac before they become accessible. Based on the brief description that's the only advise I can offer at this time.

External hard drive used on mac,how do i use it on pc?

You need to format this hard drive using your PC.
If the hard drive was formatted using the MAC then the PC won't see anything on the hard drive because the MAC uses a different file system that is not compatible with the PC.
BUT if you want to exchange files between the MAC and the PC then format the hard drive using the PC in FAT32 file system. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard drive.

I have a mac and a new iogmega external drive, 500g. I cannot move any files onto the iomega or save them. I get messages such as "that file does not exist" to iomega can't be modified,...

Hello,
With the drive plugged in, going into your Applications ' Utilities ' Disk Utility Select the drive and press Verify Disk, Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. If you don't have anything on the drive right now, try formatting it with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system from the Disk Utility.
If that doesn't work the drive may be damaged. If you have another PC / Mac, trying plugging it in and see if it works there. If the drive is under 1 year old it should still be under warrantee, in which you could return it / RMA and get a new one sent back from the manufacture.

Just completely "shutdown" your computer, and then disconnect the USB cable. Then, you should be able to manually "eject".

When I put my mac in sleep mode and restart it I get a message that says I have not put my lacie hard drive away right. How do you do that.

The message you are getting is refering to removing the Lacie before disconnecting it.

Just as you eject a drive before unplugging the cables to prevent corruption you must do the same before going to sleep as turning off the power to your USB ports(which happens in sleep mode) is no different than unplugging the drive without ejecting the drive when the computer is running.

If your Mac is set to go to sleep and save power when it is not in use then you should only plug your Lacie in when you are using it and should eject the Lacie before going to Sleep.

Failure to do so will eventually result in a loss of data.

If you have already lost data from a Mac formatted Lacie drive then you should refer to the below link for assistance in recovering your files, if not simply follow the above steps and you should not have any problems as a result of your Mac going to Sleep.

The hard drive was originally formatted for a PC and I was using it with Mac products. I had to delete all the information on the hard drive so that I could reformat the external hard drive to work with my Macbook Pro.

Hi Doug,

The problem is that mac has a diffrent 0perating system to a pc the thing you doing by switching from mac to pc the external hard drive is conflicting with one another to make your external driver to work on your pc follow these steps. go into control panal, system, hardware, device manager, universal serial bus controllers, drivers then update drivers that should reconise your mass storage driver.
