I was given a Rio Carbon as it was not working. I have other Rio products. Anyway. When I first plugged the Carbon into the USB port of my computer, the battery charge display showed for about a minute, then the display showed the Rio Logo. So far so good. No lights come on at this point. Then, the display changes to the word "Updater". I have run a variety of firmware programs that are for the carbon (found them on the Rio site and others.) and they do see the Carbon, but display the firmware as version 0.0. A few times the program has returned that the update did not work and does not state a reason, but most of the time it says it was successful. Then, the Carbon reboots and does the same thing as listed above. I've left it plugged into the USB port over night and tried again, and still get only the Updater sign, but no longer see the battery charge display.
I've booted while holding down the reset button and power buttons at the same time. Still no luck.
When I go into Windows XP Explorer, I can see that the Carbon is there, but when I click on it Windows asks me to "Insert a disc into Drive F", which would be the next drive.
Is this Carbon better off as a door wedge than attempting to make it work? I'm willing to take it apart if something would help such as perhaps a loose connection.
-   ok i have had this rio for quite sometime now and i had another rio that i destroyed because of the upgrader. i am going to try this whacking thing and i swear if it doesnt work im gonna cry.

-   I have had similar problems with my Rio Carbon to other people Here are my symptoms and my solution.
- When it started it would go to the rio screen, briefly show "New Content" and them stop. It would repeat this indefinately.
- Or sometimes I would get the battery flashing (which I think indicates low on power) - but I had left it charging for several hours
- Or when connected to a computer the screen would mostly show idle but sometimes reading or writing
- Or Particularly after trying a reset the screen would show upgrader
- The rio music manager reported "In recovery mode"
- Windows explorer reported something else (sorry I forget now)
I tired many of the suggestions reported here. Various resets and bashing the Carbon - these might have helped
My final solution was. I connected to a computer with USB 2.0 (I don't no if this was significant but I thought the extra power or something might help)
I reformatted the Carbon. I had to wait quite some time has I right mouse button clicked on the icon for the carbon and selected format. BUt my patients was work it as I was eventually able to reformat - now to put my music back!

I can't believe it, but Solution #2 works! After hours of trying to reload stuff, I gave it just one whack & hey presto!! Brilliant!
Press with a niddle on the reset hole, and after the message is gone try to turn it on. You should get an empty battery image, then recharge.

i pushed and held both the poswer button and the joystick down and held it till Rio showed then the words Cali appeared underneath then the back light lit up. after that i let go of both buttons and BOOM! i had my player back!
i wish you all the best with getting it to work

wow thank you everyone. I tore apart my apartment trying to find the rio CD that came with the player, didn't find it, googled rio upgrader, and thankfully the first result was this one. I share in the amazement that hitting the player works like a charm. I just tapped the bottom rubber side on the desk a couple of times and it snapped out of its coma.

To think I actually have been resisting the urge to beat on this thing for two days. One decent whack fixed it.
Hi. I alternated hitting reset at different points and trying to read the Carbon. Eventually, the computer stopped asking me to insert a disk. I formatted it and upgraded it, but it still isn't working 100%. I think this is the light at the end of the tunnel!

I tell you what - whacking it works a treat! Bloody thing was about to get binned til I tried that. Thanks all who suggested it.
For me I just kept trying the update and smacking it around in different directions. The update finally was able to finish after I hit it on the screen side.

Running WinXP Pro SP3 - Rio Carbon shows up as hardware under Windows Portable Devices but not under USB Controllers. Also does not appear as a hard disk or portable device in Control Panel or Explorer. How can I get the PC to recognize and work with it?
