You have mentioned that you are looking at replacing the hard drive with a SATA one. Since the G4 iMacs use PATA hard drives (an older standard) you will have to make sure that the drive you use is a PATA.

Aside from that, you should be able to upgrade to a reasonably large hard drive up to 500GB and then format the drive for a mac.

The only real trouble you will have in my opinion will be the installation as the process for taking apart a G4 iMac is very advanced. There are a few guides on how to do this, just make sure that your skill level is advanced enough to attempt the upgrade. Also, of course, make sure you have backed up all of your data and everything before you start... that can mean a world of difference to you later on if anything goes wrong.

I would personally take a trip to the Apple store and talk to a genius about this sort of upgrade, or look at other upgrade options such as a bigger external hard drive because there are many complications in this upgrade and those two options are easier.

If you are interested in attempting the upgrade yourself you can look at this explanation of the process, it is quite thorough and has pictures showing internals and the process. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html

If at the end of that you want to go ahead and open your box up by all means do and I will be here to offer as much support as I can.

Regards,
Jack

How fix Loud g4 Hard Drives

Not sure what you mean by loud Hard Drives. Hard drives are so quiet you can barely hear them. If they are loud the only cure is replacement. However, I have never heard a hard drive that I would consider 'loud' in all my years in computing./ As you show a mirror fronted mac in your question - I think you may mean loud 'Fans'. This mac was notorious for its loud fans. They can be replaced, but I seem to remember a firmware fix from Apple to slow them down - or it may have been a 3rd party utility.

I am trying to switch on my g4 notebook. And am presented with a folder icon bearing alternately a finder icon and ? Any ideas?

Your mac cannot find an operating system. Re-install the operating system using the 2 discs Apple gave you. If that don't work, then you need a new hard drive. 2.5" 120 GB laptop hard drive IDE/ATA are the specs you need. If it says SATA, then you got the wrong hard drive.

G4 powerbook wont start it shows folder with flashing question mark then apple symbol

Try taking out the RAM chips and re-inserting firmly. Nothing? Try re-installing the operating system. Nothing? Try replacing the hard drive and then re-installing the operating system. Nothing? Try replacing the RAM with new higher memory RAM. Nothing? Your fu.kd and need to take the thing in for more thorough inspection by the Apple dorks.

How to save data from hard drive off my apple power book g4

You can drag and drop your files on to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, burn the files to CD/DVD using an application called toast - you will need a CD/DVD writer to do that. If you can find one, you can save your files to a zip disk.

Hi I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The current HHD is the seagate momentus 5400.3 120g. This is now damaged. Can I use the Seagate Momentus 5400.6, 320 G, 5400 RPM SATA2. Will my laptop support the 320g...

Hello: I see no problem using a bigger harddrive in the unit, the only concern I think you might have is to purchase a hard drive caddy for the interface, Especially if the current hard drive is an IDE Interface, You can purchase a IDE to Sata Interface caddy, to support the drive Interface if it's an IDE format. You might want to check with Dell for compatibility first before purchasing the Sata Drive.

While I was on the internet my ibook g4 locked up. I tried to restart but it continued to lock up. I tried to reinstall OS10 but the computer locked up in the middle of the install. I have replaced the...

If by "lock up" you mean the mouse/keyboard freezes and the machine becomes unresponsive to any input, and you have already replaced the memory with a known good memory, you may have a logic board problem (not necessarily, but quite possible).
First place to start is by running the Apple Hardware Test from the DVD that came with your unit. (The test is specific to each model of Mac, so don't try to run it off someone else's DVDs unless they have the same model you do.) If you no longer have these, an Apple-Certified Macintosh Technician will have a special Apple DVD containing the collected tests for all models of Mac.
