The 28-90mm stands for the focal length range of the lens. In other words the amount of zoom on the lens. On a standard 35mm camera a focal length of 50mm is conisdered normal, so your lens would cover a range from wide angle to some zoom.
The D is the type of lens. It is a Nikkor specific specification. Nikkor has 2 basic types of auto focus lenses Type D and G (more on the professional side). The only difference between Nikon AF-D and AF-G lenses is that AF-G have no aperture ring. This means that the aperature must be adjusted electronically through the camera body.
Nikkor is the brand name. Nikkor the lens division of Nikon.

You should go to Nikon's website. They have lots of information and you can join the Nikonian's forum, where you can learn a lot.
