YOU NEED DRIVERS FROM DELL! WHEN YOU UPGRADED FROM YOUR OLD OS, SOMEHOW YOUR VIDEO DRIVERS WERE LOST. GO TO DELL WEBBSITE, LOOK FOR DRIVERS THAT FIT THAT MODEL DOWNLOAD, RESTART COMPUTER AND THERE YOU GO.

First check the sound settings, it could just need adjusting. If the settings are correct, then you have a driver glitch, uninstall the sound drivers from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the drivers automatically. Then check Dell's support site for updated sound drivers.
I have seen this problem before, after booting to the external monitor go into the display settings and try setting the resolution to 1024 X 768 and the color settng to 16 bit or preferably 32 bit. If you can do this, then shut down the laptop remove the external monitor and try booting on the LCD display. BPCS
