Water on spilled on keyboard

Toshiba Satellite A105-S171:  Water was spilled on keyboard when the laptop was off.  It was dried off with a towel and not turned on for weeks.  It now will start-up and run for about 15-20 minutes and then go off.  Can I take it apart and dry the insides to correct the problem?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the weeks in between should be sufficient to dry whatever water is still inside. Now what is more likely is that when the water dried off internally, some of the small gaps in between the component legs were partially shorted due to accumulated dust. This dust has now caked and formed a bridge between components. With this in mind, drying is not longer applicable, rather cleaning would be more required. Perhaps opening and spraying with an electronic contact cleaner would do the job.

Perhaps this pictorial how to would be of help.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Nope. This will require further troubleshooting to revel the true problem. The inside should be dry by now. Also check your battery, I have the same model Laptop as you. My battery tended to last about 10-15 minutes if I was lucky. If its plugged in all the time that could be a different story. You could also try taking it apart to see if anything was fried intially. Good luck to you. Thanks for using FixYa!

Sincerely,

JC

If you decide to take it apart .. be sure to look for "corrosion" that is the biggest culprit when water is spilled on a laptop. I have used alcohol to clean that up .. use a small brush (like a toothbrush) to gently scrub it off.

Best thing is to send this to toshiba and see if they can diagonsis your problem. taken apart a laptop is all of things to do and alot of parts to break and your better off having the professionals deal with this being that they have the equipment!! If its under warranty!! Jus play dumb and try and get it fixed for free! If its not under warranty then jus tell them the truth!!

Is windows 7 compatable on a toshiba laptop a105-s171

From what I understand, windows 7 requires atleast 1 gb of ram to run properly, judging by your standard system specs you have 512 mb of ram. Unless you have added some ram or plan to add some to your system then no I dont believe you will be able to upgrade and run windows 7 efficiently.

Touch Pad on my laptop is not working

Follow the guide below to tear the laptop down, you are extremely fortunate that the device is even working. Electronic sircuits and water have never been a good match, and your keyboard and touchpad are essentially just large electronic circuits. There is probably some water still somewhere under the keyboard and it is probably in contact with the tochpad cable or socket. When you have the keyboard off, use a hair dryer on warm and completely dry out all components and make sure all the small flat cables are tight in their sockets.

Toshiba Satellite a105-S2716 keyboard doesn't work. Soda spilled on it. External USB keyboard does work. How do I fix it?

I think your Toshiba got grounded or short circuit inside. Better also to use USB Keyboard, it works.

Replacement for toshiba satellite A105-S4244 dvd r/rw drive

Sure--the best one is e-bay!
Whenever I need something like this, I find it on e-bay. But if you really need to contact a company, try Spare Parts Wearhouse at 877-253-8898. National Parts Depot at 800-524-8338 may carry Toshiba parts.
I'd almost bet that the part you need is not made by Toshiba, though. Take it out and when looking for a replacement look for the mfg. name and the model.

Can't get my laptop to display on a monitor.

Most laptops require you to press the Fn (Function) key and another key on the keyboard to activate the external video port, not too sure which button on your model it is, but it should look like a monitor.

Other than that it could be your board is fried. Which will need replacement/ repair.
