Question about Projection Televisions

1 Answer

We have a problem with the power going off.

We just got a television from someone. It is a Philips magnavox 61" tv. We plugged it in and the green light will come on and then immediately the red one comes on and it shuts off completely. What could this be? Aside from turning on and off at will, this Philips 65 in HDTV has a color distortion, also the screen is bowing in, mostly in the bottom and sides.
Color distortion is prominent with white and shows up as an offset double in green and/or red

At first the tv picture would shrink then get back larger. Now the power green light is on, but the screen is black.

I had the same problem. After doing some research here I went to www.tvrepairkits.com and I ordered this kit: (TV-KIT-001-9P6031C103) Philips Magnavox 9P6031C103 Shrinking & Expanding Video Or No Video Kit. It costs about $53.00 plus about $12.00 freight.
According to the research and discussions this should fix the problem.

Try removing the two convergence chips from the board - then see if the TV powers on and lights up. If so you narrowed it down. If not - you have eliminated convergence IC problems.

Its either the power supply or the LSB. You can get free info at the following link which will help you determine which part you need. Just leave them a email with your model number and symptom.

Maganvox TV with red-shadow to picture

Hi Emily,

Your TV has bad convergence amplifiers. They are large integrated circuits that are mounted on large metal heat sinks. They have a part number on them, but might be covered up by a bracket. The part number should start with STK. They are replaced as pairs. You will have to find someone with the skills necessary to replace them.

Best Regards,

Magnavox tv

This might be a power supply issue either in the switching power supply or in the high voltage power supply. In any case you will need a schematic, a voltage meter, and if possible an oscilloscope to troubleshoot this problem. If you do not have a background in electronics I would suggest that you take the TV to a repair shop.
