You installed windows 7 with the same drive right? After logging in insert the same disc and check whether it is reading or not.If it is not reading check the data cable,(clean and reinsert).
I think the problem is with the drive. When drives gets old it can only read few discs. Writing will fail too. Get a new new drive, nowadays price appr below 1k.( SATA).
Please try and insert the DATA cable properly from the motherboard to the hard disk as well as DVD writer, and try and interchange the power cable to this devices, or change the power pack and see if the problem continues. It might be that the power to this devices are not enough.
If this fails, then try installing a different operating system.
First tell me how old it is. If its new, then you can replace it if it is in warranty. If its old go for new one. If all the DVD is not reading then there is problem in the dive lens.
First of all, right click on my computer, go to properties, hrdware, device manager, then see in the section of CD/DVD, to confirm whether you are using CD or DVD drive. If you are sure it's a DVD drive, then follow the above steps.
The reason your dvd writer is hanging is because there is a possible problem with the laser.
Take a can of air and blow it into the drive to make sure there is no dust or dirt in there that could possibly be on the laser.
After that then try different cd's and dvd's to see if the writer will read anything. If it still doesn't read and hangs on you, then the laser is bad and the drive would need to be replaced.
