Question about HP Photosmart C7180 All-In-One InkJet Printer
"The scan cannot be performed because another program or computer is using the networked device."
I have tried disabling security and no other programmes ae running.I have also tried reinstalling the software,
I also had the same problem with HP Officejet 6310 and after trying all the solutions that I could find on the web, I was almost giving up. Then I found this on HP's IT Resource Center website (author J.Eqbal) and tried it and finally it scanned without the error message.
This error happens only in Network connections.
Get the Ip address of the Printer and open the EWS page by typing i.e http://192.168.1.102...where 192.168.x.x.x is the IP address of the Printer.
On the EWS page click on Network and get the host name and copy it.
go to the following location C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc...inside etc you will find the host file open it using notepad.
Underneath 127.0.0.1 local host
there might be the Ip address and host name ..which will be different from the current host name...change the Ip address and host name ..save the file.
Try to scan...it will definitely work.

As @teswede mentioned above, try this. It worked when everything else failed, or didn't worked consistantly.
There is something you need to do first, before this will work.
You need to go into your router and reserve one specific
IP address for your wireless printer. Then turn off your printer and restart it.
your printer should now be using the new IP address you reserved for it.
After doing the above, you should now know the printer's IP address and host name.
((NOTE: Just for common knowledge, you can go into your printer's EWS page to get this
by typing http://192.168.x.x ...where 192.168.x.x is the IP address of the
On the EWS page click on Network and get the host name and copy it.))
Now, go to the following location C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Inside \etc you will find the "hosts" file. Click on properties and make sure that
the file does not have "Read Only" set.
Open "hosts" using notepad.
Underneath 127.0.0.1 local host,
insert 192.168.1.254 HP97D4C3
(where of course this would be your printer's IP address and hosts name)

I had the same problem - could not scan from the C7280 front panel to my computer - and finally fixed it by changing my WIndows Firewall settings in the Control Panel. I used Advanced Settings and under Inbound Rules I added added a New Rule. On the Scope tab look for the Remote IP address and add the address of the printer (you can get this by printing a network settings page from the Setup menu on the printer). Kind of complicated but now it works fine for me on Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit. Good luck!
