Re: Singer Simple model 3116
If you bought this machine at WalMart, I recommend you return and the go to JoAnn Fabrics. Walmart can buy millions of these machines and pay next to nothing for them. I don't even suggest a beginner buy this machine.

try changing the needle make sure the thread does not come off the thread take up lever make sure the bobbin is not over full make sure the bobbin is turned the right way in the bobbin case cause that can make the sewing machine jam up clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint
try changing the needle
check to see if the thread has come off the thread take up lever--that can jam up a machine
check to see that the machine is threaded thru all the thread guides on the machine
check the top tension to make sure it set correctly--usually 3 or 4
if you need a instruction manual singer has some free downloads
Go to the singer website
At the bottom of the homepage look for instruction manual--click on it
It will take you to another page
In the box put in the model number of the machine (example 3116)
They have one & it's a free download
"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.
You really should go on the Singer website and look up support and frequently asked questions. If, you cannot find your manual they have it there to download for free. I really think that you are not threading the machine right, check it with the presser foot up and the thread should feed freely, then lower the presser foot and it should not feed at all or very little. Most of the bunching of thread underneath is the fault of the top thread not the bobbin. Make sure you turn the handwheel towards you never away from you. Also, check your needle, inserted flat side away from you and, if it were me, I would use a new needle before I sewed again, This machine comes with a dvd, try watching it.
