You have either a bad volume potentiometer or a bad solder connection to the component board. The radio is in need of repair.

Trying to determine the cause of intermittent signal from microphone on a vx 4600 radio

Yes, short or lack of a good ground. It could also be the cord attached to the mic. The mic itself should provide the needed feedback to the radio that a mic is plugged in. Do you have anything connected to the accessory jack in the back of the radio? That can cause the same issue.

Transceiver is locked on Channel 1. Up/down buttons and channel knob have no effect.

Hi Bob,

Firstly, you say you purchased the unit NIB = New In Box, so that would mean you should also have a user manual that came with it.

If this is not the case, take the whole box and dice, together with the purchase receipt to the place of purchase and ask for a copy of the user manual, which won't cost a thing.

If, on the other hand you do have the manual, read the instructions carefully, before you turn the radio on.

It will guide you step by step on how to get your radio setup & running.

And if frequencies are required to be programmed into it, it will tell you exactly what is required to do so.

If during the course of setting up your radio for reception, you encounter problems, then towards the back of the manual there will be a trouble shooting section.

All being well, you should be up and running, if you follow my advice.

I hope I have assisted you.

Best regards,

VX-5500 LowBand change power to 20 or 50 watt to suit power amplifier.

The channels can be programmed for either low or high power on a per channel basis. Perhaps I do not understand what you are doing? It would be easy to program each channel to 20 watts. I would take the high power and turn it down since the low power setting from the factory is usually under 20 watts.
